OK to lose?

Hello everyone! I just found out I was pregnant for my 3rd time, and am a little concerned. We lost our second baby at 8 weeks, so I am extremely nervous about this one. I am only 4 weeks right now. I am due on my parents anniversary (May 23rd). I am officially considered overweight (possibly even obese), and have been working on cutting calories for a few months now. I have read a lot on here about only needing to consume enough calories to maintain during the first trimester. However, is it ok to keep at the calories I have been eating to lose since I am starting overweight? I lost weight during my first pregnancy (25 lbs), and the doctors had stated that was fine. However, I am starting at a lower number now as well. Also, what about exercise? Should I continue, or not? Thanks for any advice! I don't see my doctor until Oct 15th, and would like some sort of guidance before then! :)

First of all, congrats!!!!!!! I didn't change my calories until I talked to my doctor but I would eat at maintenance bc they're going to make you up them anyway. And since you previously had a miscarriage I wouldn't workout unil you talk to your doctor..you just never know, you may be high risk and may have to be on bed rest so I would just take it easy for now!

I would ask your doctor, but if you are overweight I wouldn't think losing would be bad. Maybe you could set your deficit at 250 calories a day, so it's not big of a deficit. I would take it easy on exercise unitl you talked to your doctor, maybe just walking for now. And congrats :)

I agree with the others - if you eat at a deficit, make it a small one for now, and considering your past experience, I would hold off on the exercise until I talked to my doctor.

Generally, it's perfectly safe to eat at maintenance or just below and to continue exercising. Losing weight during pregnancy is also normal if you are starting out on the heavier side - but you should listen to your doctor's advice because we are all different.

    Congrats :)
  • Thank you all! We are very excited, and I think I will hold off on exercise (other than walking) until I know for sure everything is going to be ok. I really appreciate the advice. I just want to do whatever is best for the baby. :)
