Lori's "I can't run that far"

I am so not a runner. I can walk & hike like no other, but run, no.

I have always been envious of those people that just go run for miles & miles. I had signed up for a 5k through work. My goal is to run the whole thing. I downloaded c25k & have been doing that. I'm currently walking @ 4mph & running @ 6mph for an average speed of 5mph. As of the other day my knees are killing me. Patellar tendonitis. I'm now wrapping them for my runs, icing & lots of stretching after.

As long as I dont have any pain while wrapped I'm ok. I have to ice & stretch really really good.

Excellent!!! Glad to hear you're taking care of it. That's one of the few injuries I haven't experienced. So you have almost 3 weeks till the first 5K- are you going to try to run the whole thing?

Im gonna try. I talked with the pulmonologist at work about breathing. Been practicing that. Pursed lip, in through nose for one out through mouth for 3. It has really helped. I also pre medicate with the inhaler for preventative measures. I had only just downloaded the C25k app & am more advanced than the 1st week. It said "time to cool down" & I wasnt even close to my cool down spot. I think tonite I'm gonna jump ahead & see what happens. If I'm not running a full 5k by race day I am gonna slow my pace just to see if I can run it. If I cant I still have mudfactor. :)

Tonites run felt like an epic fail. Started off great. Did a nice long stretch before. Wrapped my knees. Felt good. Started out everything was fine. Did my 5 minute warm up and everything was great. Started running and it was like an obstacle course. I totally forgot it was trash nite. So up and down the sidewalk. Decided that was stupid and stayed in the street for a bit till I got to the elementary school. Well it's pop warner nite so the street was packed with parked cars. UGH. Ok, now who doesn't put there dogs on leashes at football games. The people in my neighborhood. Tripped over a chihuahua. Caught my fall, but twisted my ankle. The rest of the run was a walk. My knees are killing me, my ankle hurts. Maybe the universe is telling me I need to take a break from running. I did jump into running pretty fast & furious.

Gonna take a few days off of running and see what happens. I will continue to stretch & ice.

Yikes! That sounds like madness! I know what you mean about the universe sending you messages.....I have a philosophy I apply to all sports- Never do "One last run". This comes from snowboarding. Anyone who skis or snowboards (I think you do!) knows that once you've spent a long day riding, you get to the bottom, and you're tired, and hungry, but the tickets are expensive and you don't get to go that often, so you think to yourself "I should just do ONE LAST RUN" Never. Ever. Do. one last run. It's always when you are most vulnerable to injury, and it happens all the time. I broke my tailbone on one last run. I got a concussion on one last run. So now whenever I'm feeling like that for any sport, I call it quits. Just walk away. I think this may have been your one last run.

On an unrelated note- are you doing static or dynamic stretches before? If you're not warmed up static stretches can do more harm than good.

I hope you feel better soon! Get back out walking as soon as you can, but take the time you need before you push it again!

I usually stretch after running around my house doing the "anybody see my shoes. No the other shoes. No the running ones" etc..Then some marching in place, jump up & down shaking my head like a prize fighter before a big match (its how I get pumped) before a good deep stretch. Then I walk for 5 minutes before I start running.

Today would have been a run day, but I'm so not feeling it. Decided to go for my hike back to my God Place to get centered. No pain hiking unwrapped. Maybe by sunday I will run again.

Wasn't gonna run again till Sunday. Woke up after one of the best sleeps I've had in years feeling my wheaties.

    Walk 2 min 3.5
    Run 3 min 5.0
    Walk 2 min 3.5
    Run 3 min 5.0
    Walk 2 min 3.5
    Run 6 min 5.0
    Walk 2 min 3.5
    Run 3 min 5.0
    Walk 7 min 3.5

Actually ran for 6 minutes & could have kept going. No wraps. No pain. I think my knees like the tread
Ill better than the street or trails.

That's great Lori! I find the treadmill easier on the joints, too. I think it's the soft surface makes it a bit less impact.

That's really good! I've been looking at 5Ks in my area, but I need to get my best friend moving so she can do it with me. I'm excited for you! I think you're going to do really well.

Thx. I have been trying to push it a little further each time. I find if I blast the music & I cant hear my breathing its easier to go farther. I also watch the tv to occupy my mind so Im not focused on how long I've been running. I just glance down & say ok 1 more minute you got this.

I hope you can get your friend to join you. I'm nervous & excited all in one.

Last nites run wasn't so great. I had worked before going. So walked a total of 6.8 miles during my shift. Then

    Walk 2 min 3.5 mph
    Run 13 min 5 mph
    Walk 2 min 3.5 mph
    Run 3 min 5 mph
    Walk 5 min 3.5 mph

My legs just weren't feeling it. I kept thinking I'm gonna trip from dragging my feet. Went & lift after.

    Squats 140 5*5, bench 5*4 (failed) 3*1, assisted chins & dips 5*5.

It is race day. I'm pretty nervous sitting here on my patio drinking my coffee. My goal is to run the whole thing no matter the time. My plan is when I feel like walking, slow my pace. I'm well rested. Got my HRM, coffee, & music. I think I'm ready to rock n roll.

Susan G. Komen - Race for the Cure
    Running 42 minutes.
    Various speeds

RUNNING. Can you believe it. I was running. I ran the whole thing. I am still shocked. I can't believe I did it. It was amazing.

I found my place at the starting line after walking around and stretching. I took everyones suggestions & stayed back because I'm slow. The countdown and my heart started racing. Am I really ready for this. 5...4...3...2...1 and were off. Put my music in my ears and away I went. People were really kicking it, I just told myself slow & steady, you got this, you trained for this. Turned the first corner and people were on the side lines huffing away. I looked and thought "Beans said this would happen go your own pace". So thats what I did. This lady was in front of me, with a similar pace to mine. I thought I will just keep following her. I started to get winded. So I slowed my pace. I thought I got this. Just don't stop. Then there they were the cheerleaders at mile 1. Pom Poms & all. The lady I was following started to walk and I thought I got this. I can do this. Halfway to mile 2 I started to doubt myself. I started to think, "I can't do this. I'm not ready for this. I can walk part of it and just finish." then my phone chimed. I got a message. I didn't look at it, I just thought thats MFP. I can't walk I have to do this. They believe in me. If they think I can, than I can. I turned the corner and there they were. The cheerleaders at mile 2. Somewhere between mile 2 & 3 I started thinking I fought this alone, now I run alone. Nobody in site. I was tired. My legs were heavy. I just didn't want to run any more. Then all of a sudden I got this thought. I finished everything with my fight as much as I didn't want to. I finished treatment. I can finish this race. I kept going. Sweat pouring off me. Breathing hard. Feeling like I was going to die. I wasn't sure how much further it was and I had felt like I ran forever. Then this lady ran up to me. "Your almost there. The finish line is just around the corner. You can do it". I didn't think I could. Then as I rounded the corner. The cheerleaders were there. The most beautiful site I had seen. A big giant balloon arch with finish written on it. She was right. I'm almost there. I can finish this. I felt sick to my stomach. Hot, sweaty, legs hurting but I kept going. I can do it. I just kept going. As I crossed the finish line I started to cry. My legs were shaking so bad. I guzzled some water and proceeded to the nearest bin. Yes I puked.

I feel so proud of myself. I CAN RUN THAT FAR. I did it.
