I was struck by the range of women who participated for my dance school in a recent neighborhood celebration. Here are the pictures. Belly dance has a place for us all, so shake it! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151159303446731.444201.96217141730&type=1

I don't use Facebook so I can't see the photos but I'm SURE it was awesome. I just signed up for an African Dance class.... I don't know if I'll really have the guts to juggle all the jiggle but, I'm a sucker for a great drumbeat. Wish me luck! ; )

I believe these are public facebook photos anyone can see. Good luck with the jiggle juggle!

WOW photos! My favorite though would be actually playing the dumbeg. And those little finger cymbals. I was so entranced by them as a kid at family weddings and such. My cousins are great dancers and they always have a pair o' those stashed somewhere. Never leave home without it!
  • Oooh, I spy some khaleegy thobes in there - specifically the two ladies in pink ones with their hair down. I bet that was lovely to watch!

Looks like you all had a wonderful day

trishtrish, the point of posting those pictures is that a number of women in the studio are quite big -- and beautiful too, and amazing dancers, and some of them aren't even 22 anymore. Belly dance is all about celebrating -- put on some music and dance alone to celebrate your awesome self if you aren't comfortable dancing in front of anyone yet!
  • Amen to that. It makes me very sad to think of waiting until I'm a certain size or weight before feeling good about myself as a dancer. Belly dance really is a case of it not being what you've got but what you do with it that counts!

I spent yesterday and Friday at a bellydance intensive weekend training for beginner & intermediate students. As always, I'm impressed by the breadth of ages and sizes of women in this artform. The guest instructor, Nourhan Sharif, is quite well-known; she runs a school and festivals in NYC and a line of dancewear. She kept talking about the advantages larger women have in bellydance -- that you really need to have something to jiggle! She almost made me want my 20 pounds back...
  • I can't begin to tell you how happy it made me to see different sizes/ages in my class...Belly Dancing really is for "any body"
