Push-ups

First off, I just want to say how thankful I am to have found this group! It makes it much easier know that I'm not making this journey alone. It's also very nice to be able to have discussions, just like the one I am about to start! :-)

I've noticed I'm not the only one having a hard time with the push-ups section. I do the "girlie" ones on bent knees. I believe I am keeping my body straight. I can go up and down a little bit, but not very far. If i push to get my body closer to the ground at this point...I won't be able to push back up! So, I do my "mini" push-ups and am hoping that as the days go on I will be able to lower myself closer to the ground and eventually do real push-ups.

Is this the same problem other people are having? Am I doing the right thing with my mini push-ups? Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks for your support and good luck to everyone!!

When I did my first round of 30ds I couldnt go down very far either, I just did what I could, now im still doing girly pushups but I can go down pretty far. Its all about getting stronger, do what you can now and as you get stronger push yourself a little harder.

My pushups are pretty wimpy too.

Is anyone NOT doing girlie ones? If you weren't just born with awesome upper body strength, how did you get there? How long did it take?

You are not alone! the push ups are the WORST for me too! It's the only part I'm dreading for tonight....I didn't even mind the side lunges/arm raises as much as the push ups!

Push ups are naturally harder for women because most of our strength is in our lower bodies/legs. Some women (not me!) are also rather top heavy and having a large chest can make push ups incredibly difficult. I can do regular guy push ups, but after the first day I was unable to do them and had to do the girly knee push ups. There is nothing wrong with that, especially if you are trying to lose weight and not just train and get in shape. The more weight you have to lose, the harder the push ups will be. If all that weight was muscle and not fat, it would help you, not hinder you. Don't give up on the push ups guys, just push yourself for closer to the ground and really focus on using your chest/arms to their fullest advantage!

I did the girlie push ups..... and the last time I did 30 day shred, I stayed with the girlie push ups the whole way through at first I could not even do all the reps even with girlie push ups! and as time went on I got a little better at it, never tried to do the regular push ups, but was able to get through the whole segment with out stopping.

I do about 11 regular push ups and girl push ups the rest of the time. I don't touch my nose to the floor, like I've seen some people do, but I go pretty far on both.

I say, do what you can and just don't stop.

Level 2 planks are my enemy LOL...

I can do one or two pathetic full push ups but do all girly ones so I can keep up and keep better form. When I originally started the Shred 2 weeks ago I really REALLY struggled and could only move a tiny way in the girly ones. I got up to day 6, got sick and didn't exercise for 2 weeks. Starting again now, I can now do all the reps, if slightly slower on the second set, so keep up and you will improve!

My underarm/chest area - pecs I guess - kind of cramp up towards the end of the second set and kill the next day. Really hope that stops soon!
