Crazy Cycling End of Year Goal

I came to the realization the other day that without goals I don't push myself like I should. Kind of a one of those "well, duh!" moments. I had pushed myself to ride 300 miles in September and after I hit that there was the rush of accomplishment, but also the let down of completion as I had no new goal. But what if I came up with a crazy goal to reach by the end of the year? Ding, light bulb blazing in my head. And what better way to motivate myself than to put it out into the wild world of the interwebs to a.) hold be accountable and b.) brag when I hit it. So here goes.

As of yesterday 10/9 I had clocked 945 miles on the bike since 6/4 of this year. My crazy goal for the end of the year is to hit 2,000 miles on the bike, or I need to average 12.7 miles/day for the next 83 days. Now I have been averaging 250-300 miles/month which won't get me there and coupled with the looming chill of winter which may hamper my efforts, this is a crazy goal (but doable).

So, who's in in?

Post your crazy end of year goal (related to cycling), why it's crazy and join me in beating them to a pulp!

Are you/Can you commute to work by bicycle?

Commuting by bicycle has really helped me knock down some high mileage for a now 2nd year cyclist.

I originally set a goal of 500 miles per month, due to an accident I missed the 500 in February but came back with a vengeance averaging over 900 miles month for the past 5 months.

In other words, if you have a feasible plan such as commuting by bicycle (even running some errands) then your goals are achievable and you can have fun in the process.

Off to change for the ride home and looking forward to the low 70's and sunshine for the ride.

I commute daily, in the last 3 months I've driven to work less than 10 times, maybe even less than 5, that's where I get most of my mileage. Issue is that it is only a 9 mile round trip so I add excursions to boost the distance. I'm slowly getting into the realm of longer distance riding on off days, but when you ride everyday it can be hard to pull yourself out of a nice warm bed on a weekend morning to ride 30-50 miles.

Started cycling in April. Have logged 2430 miles so far. My goal is 3000. Unfortunately central Illinois weather is not going to cooperate much longer. I've started collecting cold weather gear. I bought a nice exercise bike but I haven't been counting that in my totals. Guess if I am going to do it, I will be freezing my butt off. :-)

    Ok - Here Goes...

mad target for the year is 10,000km between 1st jan 2012 and 31st December 2012.

Why it's mad ? - Well in november last year, when setting out my training diary, I said I wanted to ride 5,000km in 2012. By 19th June 2012, I'd hit the target. So, I adjusted it, and said i'd do 5,000 miles instead. By the 5th September I'd hit that one as well. So I decided to double my original target and shoot for 10,000km instead.

    Currently on 5864.93 miles (9444.33km)...

Amazing how targets get easier when you're carrying 153lb less fat around, isn't it

I've done 1764 miles so far this year since March. With the company car going at the end of this month and it not getting replaced, I think I'd like to at least match my best month to date which is may when I did 405 miles. So I am going to aim for 2500 miles, and will re-assess once I achieve that, hopefully weather pending by the end of November.

Two full centuries completed in less than 7 hours.

Over 2000 mile of road biking.

    So great to be healthy.

Broke through 1,000 miles on Friday. Currently sitting at 1018 with 77 days left.

Love seeing the other crazy goals. We can do it!
  • I'd like to match (beat) last year's total of 3600 miles, and am only 200 miles from the target.
With more than two months left in the year I feel pretty confident.
    NO SNOW, PLEASE !!!!

    Great goals everyone!

So, 66 days left, 837.9 miles to go. SInce I started the thread, have done 220 miles. It seems like a huge stretch - that's why it's a crazy goal! Going to try a long ramble this weekend to pad the stats but we'll see if the body and family are willing.
  • My only goal this year was to surpass every monthly mileage total from the previous year. With the exception of June, when I took a long vacation, I have been able to do that. After I passed my 2011 total of 4,479 miles, I set a new goal of 6,000 miles for the year. I am currently at 5,408 and am facing some really cold weather between now and December 31. I hope I can make it.

Maybe I should shoot for 10,000km of OUTSIDE riding - there's a good chunk of trainer distance in there...

    Just as an update...

42 days to go, 626.9 miles to go, 1373.1 gone. The grim reality of failure is dogging me, laughing and pointing at me for such an audacious/crazy goal. I'm not going down without a fight though.

  • I am now 152 miles short of my 6,000 mile goal. Planning to ride 27 tomorrow. Should be able to hit the goal before the end of November.

I was shooting for 3650 mi for 2012 (i.e., 10mi/day x 365 days/yr). I'm now at 3305 and it's about to get *kitten*-numbing cold here in the midwest US. Last year I aimed for 4000 mi and I wound up riding in sub-zero temps the last week of the year. Managed to hit my 4000 (and not a mile farther!) on New Year's Eve. When in doubt, go ride!

2506 miles as of Friday 21st. Crazy cycling end of year goal done. Just another 16 miles to walk the dog and I hit 500 miles for the year. Thanks everyone, this was a good challenge that kept me on the straight and narrow these last few months.

    Hello everyone!

My 2012 Goal is total to 12,000km (7,456 miles). It seems really crazy at that time as I was doing only 500 - 600km a month. But I really did not see the point of setting a mediocre goal - you set mediocre goal, you get mediocre result. Not much satisfaction even if I make it.

So far 11,935km (7,416 miles). Still need 65km (40 miles). I think I am good

Have been really slack the earlier part of the year, luckily got a couple 200km rides in thanks to the bike tours. And I am blessed to have weather that I can ride year round here.

Well, it is less than 12 hours until 2013 and unless I ride 236.4 miles in the next 11hours and 23 minutes I won't make my goal. Needless to say, it isn't happening. Lots of things led to this, mostly an appaling malaise and disinterest in riding more than I needed to. This probably coincided with the change in the weather and while I still enjoyed commuting to work in the nasty weather, it doesn't lend itself to being out too much longer than I need to. Plus other things, like life, mechanincal issues, lack of good routes to ride/boredom with current routes, the usual stuff besides craching that gets people less motivated to ride.

But I'm proud of what I've done. Before this summer (and the move to rural Redneckville) I was averaging maybe 7 miles a day, 3 days a week. My running average (hint, word here is average) is 14.45 miles/day, usually 5 days a week. I've lost weight, things that never used to fit do now, I've made some new online acquaintances, learned to make better choices about what I eat and generally feel better about life.

Some stats (my numbers and Strava are slightly off as there were some rides that I didn't track, for whatever reason)
    Since June 2012
Mileage: 1745.9 (1763.6, maybe more for untracked))
Feet Climbed: 91,342 (add another 1,00 or so for the untracked)
Time on bike: 1421 hours, 20minutes (add another 5-10 untracked)
% of days commuted: at least 90% (only missed 1 day since 9/7, somewhere areound 7-10 days missed since end of May/early June)
Coldest temp: 9F Hottest temp: 98F
Highest sustained winds: 25mph Highest gusty winds: 35-45mph
Worst weather: 28F and snowing, winds 15-25mph or 98F, winds 25mph+ your pick.

It's been fun, looking forward to my new goals in 2013!
