Fainted dead away - help....

So I have been at a professional conference since Tuesday. I have eaten well but have not been hydrating well and sad to say (maybe) had way to many beers on Tuesday evening. Got a great nights sleep on Wednesday, enjoyed the morning sessions Thursday and then drove the 2.5 hours home. Unpacked, dressed for 60 degree weather, hooked up Haley (3 year old German Shepherd) and of we went for a short run of 4 or 5 miles....at least that was the plan. 1/4 mile takes us to the corner and then we go 1/3 of a mile up a big steep hill. We were making way better time than normal and had a runner about 1/3 of a mile in front and in back of us so just poured on the speed and energy up the hill.....making awesome time, better than we have ever done, feeling great. We lost the runner in front at the turn but the runner behing us came up the hill too so we had no reason to slow down as it is a fairly dangerous section of road and he is running on the wrong side of the road (with traffic). 300 yards or so after cresting the top we are faced with an oncoming car so I tell Haley to heel because of the runner behind being on the opposite side of the road and nearing us....dog steps out in front of me and we come to an abrubt stop.....and then there is this rush - OMG - and then I go down on the side of the road in the grass (actually let myself down easy when I realized I was about to faint). Got back up, head spinning, and started walking. Runner behind passes us and we walk for 1/4 mile and then go back to running at about an 11 - 10 minuter per mile pace for the next 3.25 miles. Any idea why this happened? Is it the abrubt stop? Is it a low blood pressure problem (I am not yet off all BP meds but I am close; didn't experience the normal low BP black spot in vision so I think not)? Is this a serious problem? Is it possibly tied to lack of hydration? Any insight will be welcome. I will be talking to my doctor this coming Friday and this will be number one in our conversation.... Thanks for your insights!

Results are in - EKG is normal although my heart rate has slowed way down from a year ago - resting rate is now 52 compared to 78. Both the Doc and I are happy about this and attribute it to the amount of exercise I do. After describing exactly what happened and how I was breathing and moving the Doc came to some conclussions that make sense to me:
    1. Since my head and upper body never hit the ground I did not really pass out - just sort of greyed out for a second.
    2. This was most likely caused by lower hydration over the preceeding two days and then pushing myself beyond my normal limits going up the hill.
    3. The fading out was most likely from hyperventilation and putting my head down caused the blood to rush back to my brain and me to swoon.

Lessons learned: Drink more water at the next conference. Take it easy and don't push beyond my standard limits unless I am fully hydrated and have been planning on it.

Wish me luck - tomorrow I am going to attempt my first double - 5k followed immediately by 10k. Of course I will pace myself - this is about the distance not the speed.

glad you sorted it out, and it's nothing serious. Good luck on the runs!
