Where are all the Pumpkins?

I've been eagerly anticipating the autumn for all the veggie goodies that are available normally, but there are no pumpkins at the 4 main supermarkets and the staff at Aldi don't know if theirs are for eating or carving, which is helpful.

I haven't seen any little squash anywhere either, just the usual rock hard butternut squash :frown:

Has anyone else noticed this?

Where in the UK are you? I've only been to Waitrose recently but they've had pumpkins and a variety of squashes in.. Hope you find some!

The weather this "summer" has caused a poor crop of many things, and pumpkins are one casualty, as are English apples

There is no difference between a pumpkin for carving or eating, Both are one & the same

My daughter [grows own pumpkins BTW] uses the innards of a carved pumpkin for soup, which i can't stand but everyone else loves it

Try your local farm shop but yes the season hasn't been good this year. I find the little ones have a much nicer flavour for eating, the large ones we only buy for carving but they can be eaten.

Thanks for the replies, I was quite baffled.

I had heard this, that the carving pumpkins are edible but not as sweet. I'll be in search of a Waitrose methinks. :flowerforyou:

Went to my local Sainsburys today and they had two sizes for carving (I bought a smaller one for £1.50 as I have a soup request to meet from friends) good job not much difference.LOL mine will be well spiced up I was not sure as my OH hates it and never made before myself. There were also some tiny ones called Munchkins- much too expensive for me though I did not notice any butternut squash which usually see as well this time of year.

It's been a terrible year for pumpkins, too wet. The slugs and snails have eaten all but 2 of mine, and i had 10 plants in the ground!
Have seen some in Morrisons for carving, i remember from last year they don't have much flavour. Lidl is usually really good for veg
in season, so you may have to just be patient.

Saw them this morning, all fair sized, in Waitrose & Asda £3 & £2 respectively

I grow winter squashes every year as i love them roasted and they store so well. This year though has been a disaster, too cold, too wet and too many slugs. Most of mine didn't amount to anything....first year i've known it so bad.

This year's weather is likely to affect quite a few crops this year. :frown:

Our Sainsbury's has some, but then we have grown our own & have about 5 in the kitchen waiting to be dealt with lol. Although they are only small ones, but will make great soup which we can pop in the freezer for another day :)

We only have little ones in, apparently its to do with the bad weather, pumpkins and onions all suffered because of the rain
No Jack 'O Lantern this year
