Lactation Cookies

Figured I would share this with you all, as I know some of you will be breastfeeding soon!

These cookies are supposed to help stimulate milk production. I think it's the oatmeal and the brewer's yeast that do it.

I brought a bag of them with me to the hospital and I have an overflowing milk supply three days after giving birth. I have no idea if I'm just a natural milk factory, or if the cookies made a difference, but they are delicious and I devoured them like a monster!

You can change up ingredients to make them healthier too. Here's the link:

Good call bringing some to the hospital! I made lactation cookies yesterday (but used a different recipe). My recipe has good bones, but needs some tweaking. Planning to try your recipe, too!

Are there nutrition facts on these?

    Following the recipe:
    Calories 129
    Carbs 19g
    Fat 5g
    Protein 2g
    Sodium 100mg
    Fibre 1g
    Sugar 9g

    That's per cookie.

I use whole wheat flour and I cut the sugar down to make them a little friendlier. If you lose the chocolate chips you'll save calories too, but I wasn't willing to part with them :)

thanks, I did see that after I printed it. I would also not be willing to part with the chocolate chips :)

These cookies are so good! I also made a batch with craisins and white chocolate chips. I want to try making some peanut butter ones as well.

I made a modified batch of these this morning, and blogged the "healthier" recipe if you're interested.

PS: Thanks, again, Pepper, for telling us about these. I have such high hopes for them. :-)

This is such a great idea, bringing them to the hospital with you, especially since you don't get to eat meals when you want to, and sometimes you have to wait a while even during mealtime just to get your meal! Snacks are essential in the hospital, and these would be wonderful because they have a purpose.

Thanks for sharing! I will definitely be doing this ahead of time so I can have some with me! My supply was severely lacking the first time, and I'd love to have a ridiculous supply this time. (I have a HUGE freezer in my garage.)

You will have to share the PB ones :)

Edited to clarify - share the PB cookie recipe, not the cookies!

I could always try sending them to SC. :-)

Haven't tried making the PB ones yet. Must admit that the ones with cranberry and white chocolate were a little bit of a let down. The chocolate chip ones, however, are awesome. Even my husband (who is not a fan of oatmeal or the idea of lactating himself) loved them.

Have you seen they also sell them? http://shop.milkmakers.com/

$49 for a month supply?!? I think the total cost for me to make a month supply at home was $5. That's a crazy mark-up!

Last time when I was having issues with my supply, I remember looking online just to make it easy and almost choked when I saw how much they cost. I then bought ingredients to make them but couldn't find brewer's yeast anywhere. I think I will prepare beforehand this time.

The Brewer's yeast was hard to find. I got mine in a health food store. It was sold in the same area as the vitamins.

I could find it as a tablet (I took them daily, along with fenugreek and blessed thistle), but not as a powder. I didn't check out that many places, though!

Made them today!!!! They're amazing and worth the effort to make them! I will probably be making another batch or two within the next few weeks just so I have them :)

I found brewer's yeast at a bulk food store, with the regular bulk yeast. I had to ask an employee where to find it because they had it in the same section as the herbs/spices (I was expecting it to be in a jar/package).

As for recipes, you can take any oatmeal based cookie and sub out x amount of flour for the same amount of brewer's yeast (at least that's what I did with my mom's recipe).

ETA: I can't say for sure the cookies are working because this is my first time doing all of this, but I tend to eat my cookies at night and then wake up with leaky boobs before one of the late-night feeds. The only other time they leak is for a few minutes after a shower.

These cookies look SO GOOD. I'm thinking I'm going to try making these with Brewer's Yeast and Flaxseed meal as my last batch to freeze before baby arrives.

I definitely need to try this with baby #2. First baby and lactating was a disaster...my son was born 3 weeks early and tongue-tied and my PCOS made my milk supply low in the first place. I certainly hope it's not the same with this one! If anyone has tips on other ways to increase milk production, I'm all ears.

I've heard that just eating oatmeal in general is supposed to be a milk booster. And, apparently, drinking raspberry leaf tea helps.

Oh, also was just thinking you could probably mix flaxseed meal and Brewer's yeast into a smoothie.

I haven't made them yet, but I will definitely let you know how I end up modifying the recipe and how they turn out.

    ...

I just started a 60 day meal delivery plan for mamas/mamas-to-be, and I feel like I ought to give myself a few days on it before I make these. I just have the feeling they will make me deviate from the plan by more than a cookie, you know? ;-)

    Original (non-lactation) recipe:

    http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com/2011/10/chocolate-chip-peanut-butter-oatmeal-cookies.html

So, the results are in, and these cookies are YUM. I basically followed the directions for baking the cookies exactly. I recommend not baking them for more than 10 minutes. I did the first tray at 12, and they came out a little more “crisp” than I would have liked. At 10 minutes, they were much softer/chewier.

Here’s how I modified the ingredients to make the cookies a *wee* bit lower in calories and lactation-productive.

(Also, note, I basically doubled the ingredients from the original recipe. Using a melon ball scooper for uniformity, these made 90 cookies, with 104 calories per cookie.)

    1.5 cups of butter
    1 cup brown sugar
    1 ½ cups white sugar
(*Note: I ran out of brown sugar, so I ended up putting in more white sugar than I would have liked. Next time, I would do 2 cups brown and ½ cup white.)
    ½ cup apple sauce
    2/3 cup creamy peanut butter
    3 eggs
3 TBS flaxseed meal mixed with 3 TBS water (after stirring it together let it sit for a few minutes before mixing in with eggs)
    4 tsp vanilla extract
    2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
5 TBS Brewer’s Yeast (mix in with flour)
    2 ½ cups oatmeal
    1 tsp baking soda
    2 cups chocolate chips

Adding these to my agenda for freezer foods before baby comes. I was a milk factory last time and hope to be again. I have a friend who is having twins and I would like to donate if she needs it.

    Thanks!~

Just a warning to all of you: you might want to make a double-batch. Apparently husbands like these cookies, too. I heard my husband sneaking into the freezer all the time

My husband knows NOT to touch something like that that I've either made or purchased for a particular purpose! He's so good about it that sometimes he'll ask about ridiculous things, like milk, because he wants to be sure I have enough for whatever purpose I might have in mind that he doesn't know about. Maybe I'm just a kitchen nazi, though...

    But duly noted!
