I just wanted to say Hi! I have assumed I had PCOS for a few years now, but I didn't have medical coverage and couldn't afford to see a doctor about it. I took birth control to regulate my period for years. I finally was able to get a proper diagnosis but now I am having issues with my OB/GYN. I don't think he is familiar with treatment options, the medications he has given me gave me really unmanageable side effects and he doesnt seem willing to take the time to go over any options with me...or explain anything to me for that matter. I just feel so confused by this disorder and what my treatment options can be. The birth control he put me on gave me severe depression and the metformin gave me unmanageable stomach issues. I have tried 3 different types of birth control pills over the last 6 years or so, and the hormones just make me crazy. I am currently not taking anything until I find another doctor. I recently immigrated to Canada and need to find a primary that can refer me to an OB/GYN to figure out what I can do.
I am not a huge fan of pills to begin with, anyone know of a natural approach on how to deal with PCOS?

Welcome to the group and the wonderful world of PCOS. There are many natural approach's to dealing with PCOS. I have been seeing a naturopath now for 6 months and what she has me doing has made a world of difference. Along with eating clean she has me on vitex, inositol, licorice root. I have found the inositol has helped me the most. The 1st thing I noticed once I started with inositol was how clear my skin became.
If you take a glimpse throughout this group you will find alot of helpful information. I highly suggest getting yourself to a naturopath who has knowledge about pcos....most of them tend to do. They will get you on the right track. It is a uphill battle but your not the only one who is fighting it. There are so many great supportive people in this group. MFP is a wonderful thing. Feel free to friend me if you want some extra support.

Thanks! I am glad to hear other people are taking the natural route too. It seems like all the info found online as far as treatment goes lean towards medication. It is nice to see that there are groups on here with other woman dealing with PCOS cause every time I talk to any of my girl friends about it, they dont really understand what I am going through.0

I am not a fan of pharmaceuticals. Since being diagnosed my OB put me back on BC so I would cycle. I don't want to be on them. I know a lot of people here are TTC, I am not. At age 37 and with the other health problems I have I no longer think childbirth is an option for me. But I would rather not stuff my body with hormones anymore.
My Primary Care doc gave me Metformin, which seems like a waste of money. It's been a little over a month and the weight is still the same and my stomach still has troubles. This is a medication I no longer want to be on.
Sadly, these two docs tend to push these meds as if I don't take them I could be setting myself up for future problems. My OB tells me that if I don't have a cycle I am putting myself at risk for uterine cancer. My PC doc tells me that with the insulin resistance if I dont get the weight down and the insulin regulated I am at risk for diabetes.
So, the PCOS makes it difficult to lose weight. But I have to lose weight because the extra pounds are causing chronic pain with my back and hips. I have degenerative disk and osteoarthritis. Its cause my body to become crooked.
I am sort of on this endless roller coaster trying to get things taken care of.
About 10 years ago I was vegetarian. I was lifetime on Weight Watchers, life was good. I could run. But I could not conceive. Apparently this is something I have had for a long time and we are just now finding out about it. I was very much into taking the natural route for everything. My primary care doc back then would work with me on it too. I loved her. Sadly I moved 1000 miles away and can't seem to find a doc that views things the way I do.
My aunts see a naturopath for some of their medical issues. Shes been helping my family for 30 years. I am thinking I should go see her. I've also been thinking about acupuncture for my pain issue.
There is a facebook group and one of the natural girls shared her list as far as supplements.
It seems there are quite a few in that group taking these supplements.
Insulin Resistance (take in place of medication like metformin)
Chromium 1000mg/day
Cinnamom 1000mg/day
Myo-Inositol 2000-4000mg/ day
OR
d-Chiro Insositol (DGI) 600 mg per 130lbs of body weight. So, if you weigh 260 you would take 1200mg /day
Green Tea Extract(follow bottle instructions)
High Testosterone:
Saw Palmetto 320 mg/day
Liver:
Milk Thistle 320mg/day
Hormone Balance:
Vitex 1000-1200mg/day
They might be worth looking into for you. I am going to do the chromium, cinnamon and myo inositol. I might try the Vitex too. I was able to find this stuff on Amazon, bit better prices that my local health stores.0
