How many non-runners do you personally know who have suffered heart attacks? How many runners do you personally know who have suffered heart attacks? What is the rate of runners who suffer heart attacks to non-runners who suffer heart attacks?
A good podcast on the issue:

funnily enough i was reading an article about this in runners world yesterday. the ratio of heart attacks in people over 35 is 1 in 1000. the ratio in marathoners is 1 in 100 000. so said runners world.0

30 heart attacks from a population of 1.7 million runners......I wonder how that compares to non-runners.
I hate sensationalistic garbage journalism like this. If the author deters just one person from running she's done the world a grave injustice.0 -
My Grandfather died of a heart attack at 42. My Aunt has heart disease and so does my Dad. His first attack was before age 50. I am 5' 1" 112 pounds and people are shocked when I tell them I have high cholesterol. Anyone can have it.
My total cholesterol was 260.LDL was high. I began running. It went down to 255. And the HDL went up a bit....encouraged, i ran longer distances. Then the Dr. Had me tested again and it was still high but this time my HDL the good cholesterol was at 107 and LDL at 138. Triglycerides at 64. BP 100/64. Originally were talking meds.... now They said I need no medication. on the paper is written..."keep running ".0
