Diet time!

So I have 3 cats, 1 of which is a good weight, another is at a very decent weight but on a special diet for health reasons, and another who is just huge!

My darling Oy has hit 5kg. She's larger than my mum's boys, who are all big male cats. This leads me to my dilemma, how on earth do you put a cat on a diet when she barely eats anything here? I'm about 60% sure she must be getting fed somewhere else.

I dont want to restrict her food incase this isnt the case, and she ends up starving all day and night. She eats less than my other 2 cats who are both at healthy weights. In fact my smallest cat eats about twice as much, and remains a mere 3kg! I know this is probably due to difference in metabolism etc. All my girls have plenty toys and access to gardens outside, so they get plenty exercise. Oy is most often running around like crazy yet still is getting quite rotund.

I feed her half a pouch of food in the morning (Luna gets the other half, along with a pouch of her own!), and she gets almost unrestricted access to dry food for the rest of the day I usually fill the bowl in the morning, and again in the evening. If it empties during the day it remains empty until evening. (I dont want to hear about the cons of commerical foods etc, that's not why I'm here, so please no hate about what she gets fed thanks! I take care of her teeth and stuff, so just leave it out unless it's constructive.)

Any tips on how best to go about dealing with this? It's hard because I have Luna who needs access to the food, so I cant take it away when Oy is done, and feed her at certain times. (My other girl, Izzie, gets fed separately and doesnt eat the crunchies due to her sensitive diet. She just eats once a day in the morning and doesnt look for more food.)

Thanks in advance!

I would feed her separately for a few days just to get an idea of how much she is truly eating but yes, she's likely getting food elsewhere. Most cats hunt, so she's probably getting calories from mice/birds.

Also, 5kg might be her healthy weight - dies she also feel fat, did the veterinarian tell you she is overweight?
  • She's overweight, no doubt about it. She's losing her waist. I'm sure it used to be in there somewhere... At around 4.5 was a decent weight for her, but recently she's been expanding at an alarming rate yet I've changed nothing with her diet. I'm taking her to the vet to get cultures done and just be sure there is no underlying cause for it, but i'm pretty certain she's just being sneaky and eating some other poor cat's food.
