Hi all, I am registering for a local Spartan race that is in May. I have never done anything like this at all before and was looking for some advice from all you veterans! I am trying to get a team together as well. I know I need to work on my upper body and grip strength. Any and all advice is welcomed!

Work on your endurance. Probably the most important thing. The obstacles are tough and will take a lot out of you. Make sure you can do burpees. Any obstacle you cannot complete comes with a 30 burpee penalty. Do lots of these, they are great exercise and you don't want to learn on the fly. A set of 30 burpees is surprisingly hard work.

Make sure you come prepared. The right clothing and shoes are critical. You will probably need to read a lot of blogs to figure out what works for you. I tried lots of different ideas during training, better to find out something doesn't work for you there than in the middle of the race. Spartan races are very minimally supported, be sure that you have hydration and nutrition if you are doing a longer distance. You will absolutely need it.

Get a partner too. Having someone to with you is a big help.

Other than that, read all the blogs. There are tons of blogs that talk about preparation and training for Spartan races. They are easy to find in Google.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Ok, well now I am scared! Maybe I shouldn't start with a Spartan Race..... lol
  • Only problem is when you do one you will wan to do another! Good luck! My wife is doing her first one in April with our sons and teenage grandson! Good luck and don't back out! Partner is great but if you don't have one there will be alot of others there that will help. These spartans who attend are great!

Don't be. It's more mental. If you train and she up prepared then the only thing that can stop you from finishing is you! When you finish you will be happy you did. My first Spartan was the Carolinas Beast, now I am signed up for 3 more next year. You'll love the experience and what it does for your confidence.
