The price of virginity

What do you think of this?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/oct/25/virgins-wanted-high-price-brazilian-woman

For some people (and mainly for religious reasons), "worthy" women are supposed to be virgin... This has led to procedures of hymen restoration, the price of which seems to cost up to £4000/$6000 (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1298684/Surge-virginity-repair-operations-NHS.html).

Should women's virginity be so prized?
Why would women's virginity considered more valuable than men's virginity?

How many people would sell their virginity if they could get a similar exposure? This represents a lot of money.

Virginity is overrated. That being said, if I still had mine, I would happily capitalize on rich dumb dudes by auctioning it off.

It's funny how her male friend only got $3k comparatively.

Well, I guess I'd have the op rather than face being murdered for losing my 'honour'. It's just such a poor state for humanity to continue this kind of bigotry in this day and age, in any religion/culture.

I feel sick after reading that tbh

    BAHAH!

If you want to wait, wait. If you don't, don't. I don't think it makes you any more or any less of a person. Hymen restoration? Ridiculous.

C'mon guys. Cash, kudos, press attention or chlamydia. Choose wisely.

Should virginity be so prized? No I don't think it should be the huge deal it is. But i think that people should wait to have sex until they're committed to a relationship, whether it is two weeks after starting to date or two years. I think too many people are cavalier with sex. Sex can conjure up a lot of feelings and emotions and I dont think it should be taken too lightly.

Would I sell my virginity? Hell effing no. I rather die not even being kissed than sell my virginity to some nasty pervert that has to pay to have sex.

Female virginity is more prized because women can get pregnant from sex.

Would you really turn down $75,000 for one hours worth of work (std free and with BC of course), for an overrated romantic ideal?

I sure wouldn't! show me the money b*tches!

I certainly don't get this one bit. The only conclusion I could make from this article is that some people have way too much money to burn. $780,000 might be a lot of money to us, but for some of the wealthiest people on the planet, it's a single days paycheck.

Yes, I would. I wouldn't even enterain the thought for a split second. I would probably feel gross and nasty for the rest of my life

What the f am I going to with with a virgin? Sit there and listen to her rattle on about reality show drama knowing 100% that I am not getting in her pants? Or somehow getting into those pants and having her call her friends crying half way through while I'm wondering if that blood is going to wash out of my sheets?

    I'll pass.

You did better than me. The only thing I got in exchange for my virginity was a.... "So, how are you getting home?"
    The day before my birthday.

When my friend lost her virginity at this guy's house, we had to go pick her up because he wouldn't drive her home after...months later they did end up dating for a couple of years. However, that one moment where he was a douche cemented my opinion of him for the rest of time they dated. Never liked him after that.

Well, by the time Uncle Sam is has his share, you're left with just under $500,000. It's still a nice chunk of change where you can buy a decent home outright, travel a bit, and buy a decent car. A half million would make life much, much easier for most people.

I think it's awesome that she's cashing in. I wish her all the best!

To me, virginity is more of a state of mind than a physical or "technical" thing. It is overrated, but at the same time, losing it is look as as a "coming of age" for some women.

As for getting surgery to restore your hymen, that is just stupid. Plus, why would you want it to break a second time? I hear that hurts...

I doubt this. Non-virgins can get pregnant just as fast as newly deflowered virgins.

In my opinion, it's just another way men have tried to control women, from the beginning of civilization. Religion didn't create this dynamic, but it codified it into religious law during the Bronze Age, and that baggage is still with us (although thankfully ignored in most "civilized" countries).

Female sexual liberation has always frightened men, and the cult of the virgin is another manifestation of that fear.

When I was in grad school a girl I knew took a marketing class that had a group project to come up with a campaign to stop suicide bombing. The two quotes above were pretty much recommendation for the campaign. As far as why female virgintiy would be more valuable than male virginity, here is a list of reasons I can think of off the top of my head:

    1) While it is not perfectly verifible, it is much easier to verify virginity of females.
    2) The nature of sex, where fluid exchange is internal to females but external to males slightly increases the probability of a female contracting an STD from an infected partner.
    3) A man is almost guaranteed to have an orgasm from sex. If he is not very good or not very confident in his sexual abilities, it may be preferable to have an inexperienced partner who wouldn't know better. Women tend to be attracted to the bad boy/confident guy. That guy is more likely to be sexually experienced.
    4) From an economics perspective, income/wealth is a determinant of willingness to pay for a good or service. Some (certainly not all) of the difference in price for the woman and the man could be attributed to differences in wealth accumulation between men and women.

I don't know that I would sell my virginity. My first boyfriend and I were both virgins when we did it. I love that memory! We were 15 and we had been dating 8 months and we did it on the floor in his parents living room watching MTV .. lol. Parents Just Don't Understand was playing. It did hurt .. for the one that said "I heard that hurts". But it wasn't that horrible. I remember what I was wearing .. right down to the undies I had on!

Maybe if I was 30 and still a virgin I would sell it at that point .. lol.

I saw one case of an Arab woman who was raped and no longer had a hymen. But she needed one so her fiancé would marry her, so she had one put in so on her wedding day she could prove to her husband she was a virgin.

I would do this without question. Are you kidding? My first time was awful -- I'd much rather have gotten at least paid 6 figures for it! Instead all I have is a terrible memory.

I think it's also important to note that the woman who's selling her virginity is very attractive. I'm sure if she wasn't, the bidding might start at a nickel and not get much higher. For that dollar amount, she has to be the complete package. I'll venture and say that some people's virginity is worth MUCH more than others.

Also important to note, some of the younger women on here say "no way" to selling it. While the older, experienced women say "absolutely yes".

24 and I'm already considered an "older, experienced" woman.

I'm strangely okay with this, hahahahha

Well, for the older, experienced women, it's really a moot point, isn't it?

As to the brilliant plan to have restoration surgery and then PROFIT, my guess is the law of Supply and Demand will not be suspended for this enterprise. Meaning the market is about to be flooded with 30+ year old "virgins". So I think the days of six figure payouts are long gone.

My guess is you'll make just enough to cover your surgery, plus a hundred bucks for the effort.

Given the context of the article, my comment was completely appropriate. The whole point of the article is putting a price tag on someones virginity. The women in the article sold hers for $780,000. Natalie Dylan sold hers for 3.8 million (Google her and you'll see). There are a lot of factors that determine how much someones virginity is worth on the open market. Some people might think theirs is priceless, others will certainly beg to differ.
