P90X - Am I being overly cautious?

I'm really excited to start the P90X Lean program, but I'm holding off for one month while I take the time to get a little more fit first. For the last 2 weeks and for about another month, I plan to work out 6 days a week doing Bob Harper's 'Yoga for the Warrior' and 'Body Rev Calorie Conditioning.' I can get through the hour of yoga with some modifications, but have only made it half way through the cardio (which uses light weights). I feel pretty good about the yoga - i know how to modify and I should be able to get through it okay, but the cardio and weights are another issue. Also, I'm planning to do the Lean version of the program because my knees can give me problems, especially if I'm doing a lot of jumping (therefore skip Plyo the first time around)
Any advice from those that started P90X that weren't in decent shape to begin with? Were you glad you started when you did, or would you have been better off to condition yourself a little better first? Anyone that did hold off? Are you glad you did, or would you just jump in if you could do it over again?
Lastly, is 6 weeks of working out 6 days a week going to make enough of a difference in my fitness level? I'm hoping to start P90X by mid-December so that I can complete the first 90-day cycle before my birthday.
