Anyone with SPD?

Just curious if anyone else here is having trouble with SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction)...mine started around week 26, and at week 30 I'm really struggling. Got a referral for physical therapy this week and am hoping that helps. Swimming is the only comfortable exercise, so I'm continuing to go to the pool. Is there anything else y'all have found to be helpful? Thank you :)

Hey FitMama! I am a chronic SPD victim.

This is my second pregnancy (I'm only 13+4 this week and its been acting up for the last 3 weeks or so). With my first I found out at about 16 weeks by deductive reasoning. (after u/s, ER visits, etc...) I'm glad you got the diagnosis - that's half the battle during pregnancy. For me - the key to my relief is Chiropractic Care. I know a lot of people are really nervous about going in to get adjusted (especially on such a sensitive body part) - but it made ALL the difference in my last pregnancy.

Not all chiropractors are qualified to adjust your pubic bone, and not all of them do it the same way but here is how my adjustment usually happens. When I get on the table I lay on my back (with the table adjusted so I'm not completely flat) and my chiropractor uses whats called an activator (it is a hand held device that is built kind of like a shot, but instead of a needle it's a little hammer on the end) and she puts her thumb on my pubic bone and then uses the activator through her thumb to gently "pop" my pubic bone back into place. I'm not going to lie - it's uncomfortable (but no where near as painful as living with SPD). Then after she has pushed the bone back into a level position she has me bend my legs and hold my knees together - I try to keep my legs shut and using her hands she separates them - this is the coolest part of the adjustment I think because when she pulls my legs open I feel the bones/ligaments down there land in the right spot.

I'm usually a little tender after getting adjusted, but I can walk, lean, and sit without the pain. It's amazing!! At first when we found out last time around, I went in to get adjust about 2-3 times a week until my body started trying to hold it in place better. After that, we moved to once a week until after delivery.

Like I said, this time I'm not even 14 weeks and we've already started adjustments to try and maintain it before it gets too bad. I know how debilitating it is - and I'm so sorry you have to deal with it. If you have any questions feel free to message me and honestly - I've been going to a chirpractor since I was a toddler and NEVER have I had an adjustment that was more needed than getting my pubic bone aligned! It is a miraclous difference!

Try chiropractics, a well- trained chiropractor can work magic during pregnancy. My midwives have a chiropractor in their office every Monday.
