Not trying to lose weight?

Anyone in this group not trying to lose weight? I just completed the first diet of my life (lost 25 pounds since August) and now am back to the lower/middle end of the healthy 19/25 BMI range instead of the upper end. I no longer desire to lose any weight, but I am very interested in continuing to get into better shape.

There seem to be a lot of good groups for those like me on MFP (interested in running, intermittent fasting for health not weight loss) but I have not found much support locally here in MN. Any marathon runners in this group? I have never ran a marathon but am interested in changing that next year. I am wondering for example how you would compare treadmill running to running outside (which can be more difficult in the winter). Thanks!

    Me!

I step on the scale maybe once a month. I watch what I eat and stay (with a few exceptions here and there) under my calorie goal, but like you, I don't have a desire to lose more weight. These days, I'm basing my successes on how I feel in my clothes, how I look and feel naked, and most importantly, my self-confidence.

I am interested in running, but haven't done ran long distance yet. I ran my first 5k in October and signed up for 8 more in 2013... hoping to start training for a half marathon in the spring.

Because I'm on call a lot for work, I have been using treadmills mostly. I find them boring and completely different than outdoor running... but I run faster when I'm outside... especially surrounded by other people or running with a group.

Congrats on your weight loss! I am currently not in weight-loss mode by choice - I actually do have quite a bit more weight to lose. Just needed a break from the food logging. I have not done a full though I just completed my first half (Monster Dash in St. Paul - it ROCKED). I will do a full one day, but probably not until I finish losing weight, whenever I do that.

Over the winter I'm doing New Rules of Lifting For Women with some maintenance running in between. I find treadmill VERY different from outdoors. Different muscle are engaged because the motion is different; on a treadmill you're not propelling yourself forward at all, your feet are just moving under you. Outdoors you're exerting energy to move your entire body forward, plus with the varying terrain & stuff there are stabilizer muscles that get worked better than on the dreadmill.

If you don't have access to an indoor track & you're in the metro area, the Metrodome is starting up their winter dome running program next week. Every Tuesday & Thursday through March (5-8 pm) you can run inside the dome for the low, low price of $1. Parking is free up in the back. My running club at work will be doing some group runs there.

    Thanks for the replies!

    Brittany,
Signed up 8 runs in 2013? Thats great! I have not signed up for any runs yet but have been checking the half/full schedules trying to pick one/several.

    Stubby,
My current gym (LA Fitness) does not have an indoor track:( I will definitely check out the Metrodome as you suggest!

The 5ks are all in the Winona area, and by signing up for all 8 versus just 1 or 2, I can get a zip up sweatshirt with thumbholes that says I "did them all" ... more or less a challenge for 2013!

There are several other options for race reg savings that I've been tossing around & I don't mind sharing! If you want to stick with 5ks, check out Charities Challenge (don't have their site handy but you can Google it easily enough). They have a deal where you sign up for I think 8 of their 5ks & the total fee is <$200. It comes out to like $18 per race! A total steal, even if you miss one you're still saving money.

For mixed distances, check out Team Ortho's Monster Series 2013. Register for 4 races (any distance, & they have plenty to choose from) & you get a 5th for a penny (of course it's the cheapest one that ends up being $0.01, but still a good deal). They have another deal where if you sign up for 3 half marathons you can pick a 4th for $0.01. Also big savings there, but personally I don't want to commit to 4 HMs next year! You get some extra swag, like a lucite holder for all of the medals from yoyur races & you get some of the gear early instead of waiting for packet pickup.

There are other race series-type deals you can register for, but those are the 2 I've been considering. Happy running!!

I sat and planned out my year to motivate my behind. Since I am already registered for the Get Lucky Half in March that gave me a good start. I have planned in the 10K Running Opener at Phalen, Northern Lakes 10mi, Mpls 1/2 Marathon, Color Run, Ragnar and the Monster Dash half plus possibly 2 other 1/2s in MI and SD. I think the Dome running thing will be handy as I get really bored on the treadmill. What LA do you go to? My gym just got bought out by LA. They are building a BRAND new one in Maplewood that i believe is set to open in Feb.. I CAN"T WAIT!!

I am here now to lose weight but when i first joined i was here for maintenance while i trained for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. It was amazing and i highly recommend it! I did all of my training for that outside in different places, at my cabin, the gateway trail, along the river in Saint Paul, in SD on small town roads, in thunderstorms and in humidity! it was an amazing experience. When I did the Get Lucky in 2011 I had to EVERY one of my long runs at the gym because it never failed... Friday would hit and we would get 10" of snow... so inside i went to run 12-14 miles on the treadmill. It is amazing how many people come and go in the time it takes to run that far! hahah But I would go outside any chance i would get..
