An orphan holiday sounds great, since you'd all be in the same boat as far as being single and/or having less family than others.

For me, my family has given up asking.... which I both love and also find a little sad. :ohwell:

We don't do Thanksgiving here (though I've always wanted to attend a Thanksgiving dinner - one year I must arrange to be in the US at the right moment, ditto July 4th!), but I can't wait for Christmas. I'll be on the train home to Scotland on the 21st/22nd (actually my cousins' house, but 'home' for me in any case). Once off the train, the air will be the cleanest in the world, the fire will be roaring, and the whiskey will be good! We'll be 17 (I think!) across multiple generations for Christmas this year, and once I'm there, things are so full-on that I don't really notice the being single bit. There, I'm the 'fun', non-parental adult, who is also sort of a 'kid', sous-chef and gingerbread-house-maker extraordinaire and provider of descants to fill a small country church at Midnight Mass.

Will you adopt me? ::pitiful innocent face::

FYI this is kind of how I always imagine Christmas in English countryside.

It's pretty idyllic - hence why I can't wait to get there. I've been really, really lucky to be adopted into my (third? fourth?) cousins' family since I moved back to the UK, halfway 'round the world from my immediate family, eleven years ago. They're very special people, and it's a very special place - heaven on earth, as far as I'm concerned. Scottish countryside, not English, though

I do find the run-up to Christmas tough as a singleton, though. With the lights and the parties and the romance of it all, it's a difficult time to be on your own. I'd love to have someone to share things with - one of my favourite times of the year would be made even more lovely if shared with someone whose hand I could hold. :frown:

Oh Casta could you pretty please send me some of that whiskey.Pleaseeeeeee?:flowerforyou:  I would love to taste real Scottish whiskey and see the difference from the stuff we get in the U.S .

A proper single malt is a thing of joy forever! The question would be whether you like peaty whiskey or smooth? Looks like I could send sample-sizes through the post... Google at your end to see if the USPS would accept it for delivery, and we could maybe do a swap - I'm in potentially dire need of York's peppermint patty snowflakes and Hershey's Candy Cane kisses... None of my usual suppliers will be Stateside this year!

I cant tell the ups store website gives me a headache:grumble: However if you can find a way to ship it I would be more than happy to send you the snowflakes and hersey CC kisses. Just let me know how many bags you want.. This could be very awesome :drinker:

I've just done some digging, and it seems alcohol can't be posted to the USA. bah humbug! I could maybe send you some by courier (FedEx/UPS etc), but you'd be hit pretty hard for customs duty, it seems. Might be cheaper (and more fun!) to schedule a holiday to Scotland and do a distillery tour!

I will spend the day tomorrow with my dad's side of the family--just dad and stepmom, sisters and their families-my stepmom is cooking with all of us bringing something- I am bringing roasted broccoli/cauliflower and cheesecak/choc chip cookie bars and peanut butter balls.
Then in the evening will go to my bf....as he has a houseful for a late dinner then we are leaving Friday to go shopping in Kittery Maine.

For Christmas, I always go to my mom's then my dads.....then bf will probably come over for a while while his kids are with their mom....not sure if we will stay at my dads or if we wil go to his sisters or seperate. Big problem--he does a big deal on Christmas eve with his family and my mom does huge Christmas Eve with her family........not worried this year as we will do our own thing, but looking to future that will be one that we will need to figure out :)

Then, for New Years I will be on cruise on my way to THE BAHAMAS!!!! (Without bf--made trip plans before we met :( )

Same. I am the only "single peep" in my family now. So tomorrow I will be deflecting jokes about them getting me a man for X-mas. I was deflecting jokes about them getting me a baby last weekend.

Had Thanksgiving (I'm Canadian) last month with the family at my mom's house. It was nice to have the whole family for dinner. For Christmas I am going to my brother's for dinner, hoping the whole family is there too as my sister isn't sure if they are going to the in laws or not. Hoping to bring the new BF to dinner as well!! For Christmas morning, I will go over to my mom's to open presents and have breakfast.
