Curious about Insanity

Ever since I saw it on TV, I've wanted to try this workout. While I am skinny, I don't think I would call myself fit. My research on Insanity has told me that you should already be in shape to compete these workouts. Is that true? How would you define a person who is "fit enough" to start insanity?

Do you have any advice on how to successfully complete the program?

Like any other program your results will depend on the effort and nutrition that you put into it.

I've read a number of "result" posts here, via Google and a support group through FB and they vary. The key is to listen to your body and modify as you need to. I've seen obese people become healthier and skinnier people put on some nice lean muscle.

I was over 200 lbs when I started Turbo Fire and I dropped 30 lbs in 12 weeks.
I'm going to start Insanity either mid December or January and my goal is to drop fat and build muscle. I don't consider myself in shape, but a better place than I was 18 months ago.

As a point of reference, I'm starting month 2 today. Before starting the program I wasn't in great cardio shape. I was jogging 4 miles a night a couple of times a week, but aside from that, and had lost about 15 lbs over the past 3 months, but I wasn't doing any serious training.

I think basically, if you're capable of exercising for 40 minutes, you're probably in shape enough to handle insanity (and if you can't do that, there's probably still quite a few people who would benefit from the program).

Just be smart about what you're doing. I'd recommend you do a little research about target heart rates and figure out what is a safe level for you. I'd definitely get a heart rate monitor also, since (especially in the first few workouts) you'll be tempted to push yourself past a safe point.

As you get further into the program you'll be doing the moves faster, and with more explosion but will have difficulty increasing your heart rate to the level it was in the first couple of workouts (since your heart will be stronger and won't have to beat as hard to handle that workout).
  • I have finished Insanity twice. I was not in the best of shape when I started. I struggled... but I push till exhaustion. Now I am on my third time around and amazingly can just about keep up with Shaun and the pros on the screen!
