Assisted Chinups

So for those of us who are doing assisted chinups until we're able to do unassisted ones, how much weight are you using? I'm currently using 50 lb and I feel like a weakling. I do 3 sets of 3 until I am comfortable at that weight, then I lower the assistance weight. Are you also doing lat pulldowns? I may incorporate these since I'm almost able to do body weight on them.

Don't feel bad! I'm starting with 80lbs counterweight, I'm doing more reps though - I did 30 yesterday.

I'm also doing lat pulldowns, but I forget where my weights are at *gotta start writting this shiz down*.

My plan: continue to do 30 chin ups, every week reduce the counter weight by 5lbs.

    Don't forget about your dips!

check out fitocracy. http://ftcy.me/PCPhAr i find it useful to keep track of work outs better than MFP. and it's fun because you level up and earn badges and stuff. it's all about turning my life into a video game.

and i'd like to say that i'm not a fan at all of the assisted chin up/pull up machine. it takes too much away from the form of a proper chin up/pull up. you'd do better by doing jump up pull ups, inverted body weight rows, and flexed arm hangs, and negative pull ups.

Try un-assited pull ups even if you think you can't I was using 48lb assist and found it difficult so I never bothered trying it on the bar...turns out I can do 5 in a row un-assisted.

Now I start my workout with un-assisted until I can't and move to negative pull ups and then 2 sets or assisted!

Well, I know I can't yet, I've been doing the jump up pull up at boxing (b/c I'm not shy to do it there)...but to be very honest, I'm WAY too intimidated to try un-assisted at the gym, in front of people... *hides*

Capt_Apollo - I'll look those up - Maybe I can do them at home, with the curtains drawn...heh

Negative chin ups (where you jump up, and slowly let yourself down with control)

make sure you keep working your shoulders, back and biceps with free-weights as well.

    Also, check this out!

So here's my problem and the reason I do assisted chinups. Maybe it's kinda dumb. But I'm super short. 4' 10 1/2". I can't reach the chinup/pullup bars even by jumping and my gym doesn't have step stools. At least with the assisted chinup machine, I can climb on the bench part and reach the bars that way. Been considering using the smith machine just for this, but I'd look ridiculous.

im not even sure how the assisted machines work.

do they remove that much weight from your body, give you that much of a push - no idea.... lost

They use a counter weight to reduce how much you are pulling up. So if you weigh 140 and you set the machine to 100, you're pulling up 40lbs

It's messed up though because you can't use momentum at all, makes it feel harder. I can do 5-8 un assisted and only 10 with 100lbs of assist.

I just do negative pullups right now. I want to start doing the band assisted ones. They allow for momentum.

I am using one of those Iron Gyms that goes in the door-way & the rubber bands (rubberbanditz.com) to assist...still can only do like 3 or 4. That shiz is tough!

So.....I have the goal to do a pullup and just realized that my crappy planet fitness DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A PULLUP BAR!!!

   RAGE RAGE RAGE

Anyone have any tips on how to find pullup bar-like things? or maybe point me in the direction of an affordable pullup bar that I can install?

Can you try using the bar on the smith machine as a pull up bar? I use the empty bar on the squat rack when I can't reach the chin up bars.

Maybe? It's a little on the public side. I am a tad worried that the workout police will tell me to stop using it incorrectly. But it's worth a try. Thanks!
