Iowa State Fair

Hey everyone! I'm new to MFP and wanted to start off by saying "GO HAWKEYES!"
I was born and raised in Des Moines, but my current address is in Afghanistan and when I leave here I'll be heading back to South Carolina where I am stationed. It has been too long since I have been to the Iowa State Fair and nothing in the south compares so I've decided I HAVE to go this year. Plus, my daughter will be four by then and she has NEVER been to the ISF. I have also decided that I need to lose my excess weight before then, so I'm using the fair (and a Cubs game) as motivation. Since it has been so long, I don't remember when to expect information about the fair to start being released. I keep checking the website and it just says to check back later. Does anyone know when to expect info or has anyone heard any rumors/info?
And since I'm new here and have a good chunk of weight I need to lose (about 40lbs), anyone out there want to be a friend, accountability partner, motivator, etc? Or you can just tell me what I've been missing out on back home since I haven't been back to Iowa for anything other than funerals and a baby shower since 2007? I did make it a point to take my daughter to the Science Center and Night Eyes when we were back for the last funeral and, wow, things have definitely changed since I was a kid!

Hi Cubbie - I'm a long term DSM resident - moved here back in the 80's, and love living here. Grew up in Iowa City - so love the Go Hawks mantra.
It is usually in the Spring (May) before the state fair puts any information out on the upcoming act coming to the fair. Are you looking for the dates of the fair, or are you looking for more of the activities? The dates in 2013 will be Aug 8 - 18th. Hope you can make it back, i go to the fair nearly every year and always have a great time - it's truly the best state fair in the country.
If you want to friend me, I'd be happy to keep you motivated and am very proud to have a friend in Afghanistan!0 -
I was curious about the activies, shows and concerts. I know that last weekend of the fair we'll actually be in Chicago - one way or another I WILL get tickets to a Cubs game that weekend. But other than that, I hope to spend the whole week in Des Moines so my daughter can experience what I had as a kid. I want to hit up Adventureland, the Science Center, the Zoo, the Farmer's Market, maybe an I-Cubs game, the fair, the fair, the fair and a Chicago Cubs game. It's weird how growing up I couldn't wait to get out of Iowa and experience "real life" and now that I'm a mom living outside of Iowa, I want to come back so my daughter can experience the "good life"0
