Newly Vegan/New To The Group

Hi! I am new to being vegan (just over a month) and I absolutely love it- I was vegetarian for a year, but gained over 50 lbs due to junk food and being completely sedentary... I am sort of starting over, though it has been a long time coming. I have over 50 lbs to lose, and I am only 5'1, with depression and a lack of motivation, so it seems. However, lately I have worked on getting myself a bit more together, I am hopefully going back to school soon, and the vegan lifestyle, while difficult at times (especially with a very carnivorous, junk-food-inhaling boyfriend, lol) has given me more energy than I have felt in awhile.

I would love to meet more vegans, especially those who are on a weight loss journey (or have had success), as well as those in my area (south Florida) and anyone who can give me tips on recipes, and most importantly, inexpensive vegan cuisine (my food seems to take up all of my funds.. :/ ) I have started going to farmer's markets (though I haven't been able to afford organic food for the most part), occasionally juicing and fruit smoothies with soy or almond milk, and good old rice and beans.. but I would love to hear tips from people who know about being "poor vegans" ;) I look forward to meeting all of you!

- Meg!

  • Hey there,

I've been a vegan for a year and half. In the last 9 months ive lost about 50lbs by not eating processed food. Its a good way of eating cheaply too. Buy lots of nice fresh veg and beans and get cooking! I know it can be difficult and time consuming but cooking big batch meals like chilli will save you some time and money. I have so much more energy and feel so much healthier now that I've cut out sugar and other nasty stuff hidden in processed food. Its definitely worth a try!

My favourite recipe book is How It All Vegan, absolutely love it. The internet is an invaluable source of recipes too.

Lol. We are totally broke right now. We stock up on lots of beans and seeds and buy fresh veggies and fruit every Friday when I get paid. My husband doesn’t work in the winter so I am trying to support the three of us (20 month old daughter as well). There is a great book called “Eat Vegan on $4 a Day”. But mostly we just make up our own recipes with whatever we have on hand.
By the way, I’m Jillian.
