Need new tires already!

Apparently, I need new tires, as I can now see the fabric where the tread used to be. It made me go back and figure my mileage on them. I got the bike new in mid-March, 2012. In the past 10 months or so, I have put on 1500-2000+/- miles on them. My rides are generally dry, on fair-poor paved surfaces, and I am still quite Clyde like at 6'3", 255lbs. Is this a normal amount of mileage to be able to put on a set of tires before replacing them? The stock tires are Specialized Espoir Sport 700x28c. I am considering replacing them with the same, but am interested in any thoughts or suggestions you may have.

What sort of bike are you riding? The stock tyres are obviously quite 'soft'.
I'd look at Schwalbe Duranos (which I have fitted on my 'winter' bike)...0 -
Depends on the tyre, but i'd say that was pretty low mileage - I generally get around 2500 miles out of a rear tyre (Summer Rubber - Conti GP 4000S Black Chilli 25mm - so they're not exactly training/touring rubber either!) and maybe 3500 out of the fronts. Winter tyres are Vittoria Open Pave CG's in a 24mm, and the rear lasted just over 2,100 miles - the front's still going strong at over 3,000 and hardly looks touched! Bearing in mind those figures include lots of mileage with my weight over 280lb...
One thing that kills tyres early is running them too soft - I'm assuming you've a good track pump and are running towards the top end of the recommended pressure range (if you are, as you say, a little on the heavier side) - I'm currently hovering around 240lb and still keep the pressure at the top end of the scale. The softer the tyre is, the more it moves, and I'm pretty sure the more it flexes, the warmer it gets and the quicker it wears.0 -
That sounds really low. I get at least 4000 to 5000 miles out of the Continentals that I use.0

And if I was your size and weight I probably would too... Most of the data I've got for Conti's (other than one set over last summer which are still going strong after 2500miles) is with my weight well over 280lb - the first set I've numbers for did just short of 2400 for the rear, but - I was close to 400lb when I first fitted them...0 -
I had a similar experience with a set of Continentals but they were not the GP4000s but a much less expensive tire. On 700x28's at ~100psi, I got about 1,500 miles out of those tires.
I currently have a set of Vittoria Randonneur on my Commuter (700x35) and they are still going strong at 3,800 miles. In fact, I am wanting to switch to a the lighter Vittoria Voyager Hyper (which I've heard of ppl getting 6,000 miles) but I feel bad for replacing tires that are still good.0 -
As TBY said it depends on the type. I run either Vittoria Corsa CX or Michelin Pro4, both last around 2000 miles (sometimes less). I really want to like GP4000 but the ride felt too harsh.0

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons, so to speak, I tend to go for the cheaper end of the tyre spectrum as the roads near where I live (Sheffield) are full of pot holes and all sort of debris (mainly from the steel works that I ride through) that rag my tyres. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I spend a lot or a little, a steel turning does not care which tyre it gets its teeth into. All this probably doesn't mean much, but I suppose what I'm saying is it doesn't take much to rag a tyre be it 5, 500 or 5000 miles down the road.0
