Did Spironolactone lower your blood pressure?

Hey ladies,

I'm excited that I have my first appointment with an endocrinologist next week. I'm really hoping I can finally get some help. One of the worst symptoms I have is acne, and nothing has helped with that...not birth control, not topical treatment, not antibiotics, and not even the things that have really improved my hair.

As much as I try to stay away from prescription meds unless it's absolutely necessary, I am desperate when it comes to acne. I feel like it really holds me back in life, not to mention as I'm getting older, it's changing and becoming more painful and is starting to scar my face.

I want to talk to the doctor about spironolactone. But, I've read that it can lower your blood pressure, and while I don't take my blood pressure regularly, it has been low every time it's been taken, and I regularly feel tired and weak. I think I may have an issue with low blood pressure, and if that's the case I'm concerned about fainting spells or something with this medication.

Do any of you take spironolactone? How has it been for you? Did it improve your acne, if you had any? Did it lower your blood pressure?

I am spironolactone, but not for acne. I don't have the acne issues. I am taking it for the unwanted hair growth which it is working great for. I didn't until recently that it helped with blood pressure. I am also on 2 other blood pressure pills and mine is just now starting to be normal, which is probably due to the weight loss, exercise and the change of birth control pill. If you have a problem with low blood pressure though, I am not sure if the doctor will put you on it, even though I feel it does very little to lower mine.

I was put on it to help with the excess hair, but had to be taken off after 6 months because I was having panic attacks, which is one of the side effects and my BP went really low. I've always had normal BP, so I don't think I should have been put on this medication. Now I use Vaniqua prescription topical cream twice a day for the hair and I really don't have any...just a few strays that once a week I need to take care of. My acne is also pretty much gone. Only really get a breakout when I get my period, which is now every 27-29 days due to BCP.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like I do have reason to be concerned about low blood pressure. I also have a history of panic attacks, but haven't had them for the most part for at least 4 years. Apparently spiro interacts with the same pathways involved in SSRI anti-depressants, so it can reduce their effectiveness. If it goes beyond that and actually induces anxiety for you, that's not good.

Maybe it's possible to counteract the low blood pressure with diet, but that can be risky business I guess. Eating to raise your blood pressure isn't exactly included as a tenet of a healthy diet!

*Sigh*, there really isn't a miracle drug. Maybe I will take my chances and try it out, aware that if I start having major side effects, I'll discontinue it.

The combination of 3 month at a time birth control (Aviane to be specific) and spironlactone worked really well for my acne. I'm not sure if it had any impact on my blood pressure. I took 1 pill a day instead of the prescribed 2, but the doctor told me as long it was working for me, that was fine. No babies while on it though!

    Good luck!
