My Angel Fish laid eggs!!!! Really!!!!

This is so cool! I came home and found my male Angel fish guarding my UVA filter and pump assembly. It's got eggs up and down it and he's been fertilizing it! Supposedly, if it works - I'll have baby Angels within a week! I'm hoping it works...in the meantime, I've GOT to reset up an old tank and get my guppies out of there!!! They supposedly get aggressive if you leave them in the tank.

    Congratulations :)

I remember when I was a kid and we bought two male hamsters from the pet shop and one of them had babies...

(My mother made the store take them all back....)

They told us to separate dad out or he would eat the babies though. eek!

Supposedly, Angel fish will sometimes eat their babies if they think the others will eat them. That's one of the reasons the guppies have to be removed. Right now, they are keeping them herded in the right side of the tank like sheep.

It is best to cover the tank so nothing disturbs them, they do get very skiddish and can even turn on each other if threatened.
Good luck hope you get babies to grow up :)

Aaagh!! The male started eating the eggs! I think my guppies were stressing him out. I read that can happen. I'm actually setting up a smaller tank tomorrow to move the guppies so if this fails, hopefully - they'll lay eggs again in a few weeks. Sob. Well, I didn't realize they'd get this way. Sigh. You were right about the aggressiveness...he was chasing his wifey everywhere for a bit. I think there are WAY too many guppies to really raise them. I'd planned on getting rid of half and putting them in a new tank - just didn't know I'd have to do it so soon!

Congratulations! I had angelfish lay eggs in one of my tanks once or twice but never managed to raise babies. We raised guppies, swordtails, mollies, and even kribensis, but no angels. Let us know how it goes!

This just goes to prove males are not right.... testosterone makes them crazy or something...

LOL. You should have seen him. He was frantic about those eggs! He turned his back and one guppy made it around the UV filter and was about to bite when he spotted him and went nuts (full blown Don Quixote charge mode). You could finally see his disgust when one of the tank lights (I've got two on timers - they are slightly off) as he said "This is impossible!" as he goes over to the eggs and chows down in a totally cannibalistic manner. You could almost here him thinking, "If I can't raise them, I'll eat them!"

It was like a Greek tragedy. Hopefully, turning the tank into a more relaxed one will allow them to raise babies. I'm moving the guppies by the end of the week. I ordered the instant gravel by Carib Sea which makes it easier to establish new tanks and will pick my five or six favorites and the rest will go to the store. The owner, who I'm great friends with, told me that what had happened was probably stress related but that they'd probably lay eggs again in about two or three weeks. Basically, guess I'm lucky to have found a pair that mates well - just need to provide a calmer atmosphere.

You're right - it's a male thing. Sigh. *kitten*...poor girl....all those eggs and what does he choose to do but kill their future progeny. Sigh. The poor girl didn't even get to say goodbye!! Sob.

This initially optimistic thread  has gone to a very dark place. :frown:

I know! I'm just sad now. I keep looking at my tank and blaming the poor gaudy guppies for the loss of those adorable babies...just think....four more days and they'd have hatched! Sob.

Sigh. Well, at least once I move them to the smaller tank I may have a second chance to breed them again per the pet store. I hope so...I really want a video of adorable little babies swimming around their parents.

Well, good luck to you with the next bunch.

(Apparently, you'll need it. Angelfish are not as sweet & innocent as they appear to be! Really, they ought to be called something else...)

Seriously, though, I think things will go well in the new tank--less stress and a calmer environment for those temperamental little guys and all. You must keep up us posted. Good luck!
