Just wheat gluten, or all gluten?

Hi all,
I'm new here and was just wondering if you are all 100% gluten free or if you eat non-wheat gluten such as oat or rye gluten? Currently my diet is wheat gluten and lactose free (10 days in) and I'm already feeling great for doing it, as I used to get so bloated, but would cutting out the oat gluten that I know I'm eating (porridge is just so convenient) be much better?
What do you think? xx

I'm 100% gluten and grain free. The gluten in oats is not the same as the gluten in rye/barley/wheat, some people with Celiacs can eat oats (as long as they are "Safe oats", free from cross contamination), and some can't. It varies person to person.

The only way to see if you feel any better without oat gluten is to actually cut it out and see how you feel after a week or so. It can't hurt to try. Are you still eating rye/barley, too?

I'm all gluten free, also oat free (can't tolerate them), and allergic to buckwheat. I had to go totally gluten free then try things a little at a time to see if they affected me. It didn't take long to figure it out.

If you have Celiac you need to cut out wheat, barely and rye. As another posted noted oats can be a concern, but looks like you are in England. Reason I say that is for whatever reason I think oats are more a North American concern and not so much in Europe

Yeah. Oats are an issue because at least here in U.S. farmers sometimes rotate crops from wheat to oats, from year to year. Then there's volunteer wheat in the oat field, and there's no way to separate the two when its harvested. So American Oats are contaminated mostly. And yep wheat, rye, and barley are the three bad ones. :)
  • I have to be 100% free when it comes to gluten because I'm allergic.
As well as all the grains everyone else has mentioned modified starches also have gluten in them all though many people still don't realise that gluten is in them which may be the reason why they are found in some gf foods and it causes people to become ill and can't pin point the cause.
You will also find them in yogurts so only natural yogurts are eaten now and add fresh fruit my self. It makes you feel good just knowing you don't have the poison in you're body as well as the physical clean feeling.
Oats are just as much an issue here in England as in america, can get gluten free oats but they are expensive like every thing else that is gf .

I am 100% grain free. No glutens of any variety, including oats, corn, rice, etc. Some celiacs seem to be able to tolerate oats, and others don't. Some don't tolerate any glutens.

As far as what to substitute for oatmeal, I use buckwheat flakes from this company: http://www.simpletreasurefoods.com/. Also use them to replace rolled oats in any recipes.

And remember: if you're a drinker, most beers and some hard liquors contain gluten. It won't say on their labels, but they're made from barley and rye. Be careful of vodkas - as they can make that from wheat or some other grain.
  • All gluten including corn gluten. And anything that is derived from them [super long list].

Lots of trial and error with GF foods. I still find things that make me sick, two years later.

I have issues, but want the CELIAC test to show level of problem, so I am rotating days till I have my appt...then will try to go 100% GF...it is really taking it's toll on me....I feel pretty good, the day after I am GF...and really awful, the day after eating gluten....and I'm getting all the levels of symptoms...first part of it solved, before I kne it was gluten, wasto change my generic prescriptions to BRAND...that helped with the bowel problems...then when I changed my vitamins to gluten free, my excema started to heal....stuff like that...so I know I'm on the right track...have had issues for 15 years, then acute symptoms for the last year...just realized it was gluten over Thanksgiving....got REALLY sick after eating a SMALL loaf of French bread I was craving...LOL...so as soon as I get tested, I'm done with all this stuff ...

and I am on vacation right now, and have spent time with my children who live elseware, and have found that they are having some of the same symptoms, with no answers from their DR's...I shared what I know about this and suggested to try a gf diet.....while I will be the one testing for all of us...
