Hello my fellow vegans!
I am sure most of you have heard about the dramazz regarding the "scandal" that horse meat was discovered in meat produce in the UK. What a BIG surprise... as if we didn't all know that the only thing you will find in processed meat is, well, decaying body parts of different innocent animals.
If you haven't heard of it yet:

What infuriates me is that it is completely normal to have cow/chicken/pig flesh on sale everywhere... but if horse meat gets into it, oh my God, HUGE "scandal"!! I understand that most people are not educated in what they are really eating, as I was before educating myself and becoming vegan, but it really just makes me sad that there is such speciesism! All animals are equal... that cow/chicken/pig on your plate is just as wonderful and innocent as your beloved cat or dog. -sigh- When will people start making the connection??

Just wanted to share the sadness and anger it brings up in me. How does this make you feel? And what do you think we could do to educate and help people be aware of speciesism?

I had a similar epiphany. Were discussing the consumption of cats and dogs in China, and I couldn't get the other party's disgust. Meat is decaying muscle tissue as you have so rightly stated. Ultimately, isn't it the same as the consumption of human tissue? How intelligent does an animal (any species) need to be before we qualify the act as murder? Pigs are as intelligent as 5 year olds. In south east asia, they consume monkey. Until we cure the world of speciesism, there's little hope for sexism, racism, or any of the multitude of isms we're plagued with. right on point.

I had the same reaction. I do find it interesting that certain animals are considered food while others are considered non-edible, even when I ate meat.

The solution to all that is eat plants and stay away from processed packaged food. Then you know what you're eating.
  • Great post, I totally agree! Why should it matter what animal it comes from? No matter what it is the decaying tissue of something that was once a living breathing being. I too, do not understand speciesism. Flesh is flesh, muscle is muscle, no matter what animal it came from. People seem to judge an animals edibility by how cute it is. I have also thought that there is very little difference between cannibalism and eating animals. It just disgusts me. I'm glad there are some people out there who can relate. Thanks for posting.
