Well, I always thought it was shown in the movie that he's not dead. Ya know, with the Captain America card scene with Cobie Smulders and Samuel Jackson0 -
I always took at as either he was dead or Fury lied. I hope the reasoning isn't super crazy but I hope it's not super simple either.

Plus in all of Whedons interviews he does mention Coulson dieing but I guess we'll find out in September!0 -

Anyhow, Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Ming-Na (Agent May), Brett Dalton (Agent Ward), Chloe Bennet-Wang (Agent Skye), with Elizabeth Henstridge (Agent Simmons) and Ian De Caestecker (Agent Fitz). And scripted by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, the pilot is expected to premiere on ABC's Fall line-up this year.
