Insurance Denial for VSG?

I'm approaching my last pre-op visit before the surgeon's office submits a request for approval of the VSG that I want. Since my BMI was on the borderline of the insurance's requirements AND I have no co-morbid conditions (only hypothyroidism), I would not be entirely surprised if they deny the request. Has anyone been denied before and were you successful in the appeal? Did you appeal it or did the surgeon? How long did it take? I have United Healthcare.

Thank you!

I am also awaiting approval of the VSG, should be hearing any day now. I have BCBS. Does your docs office work with United often? Reason I ask is because I know my insurance gal said she knows exactly what each company wants and will or will not approve. For instance, she knows my insc requires for BMI history, 2 NUT visits, 1 psyche eval, etc... She also knew that she gets their approvals within 2 weeks and in CT they do approve VSG's. Some insurance here in my state does not approve that procedure. My doc also said that they handle ALL communication with insurance on your behalf. They do not want us calling our insurance to try and push it through. I guess bottom line is that every docs office operates differently. You should ask yours about their procedures.
