Is soccer geekey?

Coming from the home of soccer it certainly isn't geeky here, collecting football cards is, but not the game.

I don't know about geeky, just outside the mainstream as you mention. Now competitive Starcraft? That's a bit geeky. But the whole eSports idea is that way.

Yay, another soccer fan! Huge Portland TImbers fan (in exile) here. A lot of folks wouldn't understand, but put them down in the North End at a TImbers match, or even with the ECS (Emerald CIty Supporters, my mortal enemies) pre-match and there is a level of devotion that you don't see in many other sports. It's a more cerebral game than many others and that perhaps is why many think it "geeky". I don't know.

I think anything someone is "fanatic" about makes them a bit geeky. One of my friends is obsessive into football - follows stats, plays fantasy leagues, watches all the games (sometimes multiple times). I call him a football geek because of the extreme love he has for it.

I think of chess as more of a game.. Unless you are talking about chessboxing which definately has a more athletic element to it..

I'm really happy that the Timbers made it into MLS. I love watching the games they play, and the games against Seattle are easily some of the best for american soccer.. Love the TIFO displays you guys come up with! I'm kinda jealous that your team has it's own stadium. Ours is Gillette and a crappy turf that the Patriots play on.. Should be real grass... If you ever make it out this way stop on my the Midnight Riders (Revolution Supporters Group) tail gate area.

I can't wait for the new season to start.. Actualyl some teams are in Arizona right now in preseason.

I just booked the 6th off since I found out that the US vs Honduras game is being played in the afternoon... Now to see if any supporters are getting together anywhere to watch the match. Loving that this next world cup will be in Brazil. Hopefully that will be a bit easier for the broadcast times.

Saw that.. Was surprised..Yours wasn't the only side to get knocked out by someone from a lower division. Watched former Revolution player and US International Clint Dempsey score the only Goal for Tottenham but still get knocked out by Leeds.

Stevie Nicol used to be the head coach of the Revs and won the US equivelant of the FA Cup in the US back in 2007. Good times.

On a side note what do you think of the new ownership group?

I don't think they got enough money to keep both the Red Sox and Liverpool competitive.. Although on the upside Liverpool will most likely be making a few more trips to Boston in the off season.

I hear ya.. The Revolution are suffering from the same thing.. Tom Brady apparently has a better completion % on turf than grass so Gillette Stadium will be a turf surface..

Are the Sounders looking into building a soccer specific stadium?

I know the Krafts are at least giving the notion lip service, but I get the impression that unless a really great deal comes waltzing through the door they aren't too keen on springing for another stadium.

I have tickets to see the TImbers and Sporting play on Friday. It's only a 4 hour drive from where I live, so not too bad.

If anyone cares, MLS is streaming most (if not all) of the preseason games on MLS.com and archiving the streams on YouTube. The commentary isn't great, the camera work is a bit sub-par and it's only preseason, but it will help fill the time until March 3rd.

It is nice to have our own field, only wish it had a bigger capacity. We're kind of hemmed in on all sides so no room for expansion, the South End will never grow thanks to the buildings behind that end and can't expand much more than they did when they turned PGE Park into Jeld Wen Field. If there was room, pretty sure we'd be setting record attendance like our neighbors to the North.

I think if the core players stay and I can't see the likes of Gerrard going anywhere, (and the recent signing/transfers have been fairly subdued this year) then they will be ok through the season. BUT, they still have a massive amount of debt underneath the team at ownership level so I am not so sure how they will cope with that - but then Manchester Utd do so go figure.

At the moment, no. They are pushing to bring the Sonics back via the Sacramento Kings and have plans to build a new NBA/NHL friendly stadium. CA already has 3 NBA teams, they can give up one, right? :laugh: Ok I do feel bad for the Kings fan base.
