1st sprint tri in a month!

My husband I are doing our first sprint tri Feb 23rd. It is a reverse, and very short: 5k run, 13 mile ride, 200meter swim in an olympic size pool. I am very excited. Swimming is my weakest. I've been watching videos on youtube for swim technique and also had a critique. It really helped but we are going to go for a few lessons before the race as well. The prices for lessons are good right now because it is not exactly swim lesson season. Running is my comfort zone because I did cross country and track in high school. Cycling I am comfortable in as well. My husband and I have been riding 15-25 mile rides for about a year now. I found a training plan online but have really been just trying to do each activity 2 times a week. www.beginnertriathlete.com
and http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_trainingprograms.asp are great resources.

I went to Active.com and found a triathlon in my area to sign up for. The one I chose has 4 free clinics/workshops before the race that have been very helpful. I found out about them on the website for the race.

Any advice? What races are you doing?

Philly Tri - Olympic. That will only be my 2nd Tri ever. I might do a local mini triathlon as well to prepare for Philly though (<.5 mile swim, 10 mile bike, 5k run). Doing 3 half marathons and probably a handful of 5 milers and 5k's. Next year I plan on really increasing my triathlons...REALLY want to do the Escape from Alcatraz one...lottery system entry though.

Anyway...advice. I just started swimming at the beginning of 2012. Never swam before; dated a swimmer in high school, so I at least knew proper form and breathing. So, what I did to start was I just swam. First few times I couldn't do more than 2 laps (back and forth) on a 25 yard pool without feeling like I was going to drown. So, I broke up each swim in to 30-60 minute sessions. I would swim 2 laps, break for 1 minute, repeat for 30-60 minutes. As I got comfortable, I increased to 4 laps, then reduced resting time, then increased to 6, then 8, then I just went as many as I could. I have a swimming watch which counts my lengths...AWESOME TOOL!!! I swim a 1.5k in around 37 minutes. Pretty slow, but I can do it without stopping.

Just like with my cycling, you really just need to get the time in to get comfortable with breathing and form. After you have that, you can worry about speed and other things later. Form and breathing are key though.
