Hi all. I had GB RNY 8/2007. I was never an over eater. I did make poor food choices & I did not exercise past the age of 14. I decided to get surgery after finding out I had PCOS. I had 3 miscarriages & it was suggested to me if I had surgery & lost weight it would be easier for me to conceive. Well...my HW was 300lbs & I only lost 80lbs getting to 220lbs. I got pregnant in 2009 & lost that pregnancy which caused me to go into severe depression to this date. I currently weigh 270lbs & would like to get within my ideal BMI with a goal lost of 125lbs. I've considered revision surgeries but I value my husband of 13yrs way too much to risk my life again. So here I am... I joined MFP to naturally lose weight. I've become obsessed with working out & don't know the correct amount of calories im supposed to intake. The MFP tools I believe overestimate caloric intake and just don't make since to me. Why if im trying to lose weight would I ever eat the calories that I've exercised off. I don't understand the logic behind their recommendations. Im 5'5" & 270lbs. I eat between 800-1100 calories per day. I don't sit up & eat junk either. I work out between 1hr & 2 1/2hrs some days as im desperately trying to get this weight off so I can get pregnant & provide my husband a child. My time is ticking as im about to be 33yrs old. Any advice or comments are needed and appreciated. I need HELP figuring out how to use this tool to my advantage so I can get results. Thanks for taking the time to read. I also will accept friends.

    1) I'm sorry for all your losses. PCOS sucks!
    2) The reason it is generally suggested that you eat your exercise calories: MFP takes your amount of calories you burn per day without exercise and subtracts out the number of calories you would need per day to reach your goal - without ever exercising. Ex: Let's say you would burn 2000 calories just sitting around. (This may sound like a lot to you but it's really not. Patients in comas are given 1600 calories per day just to keep them alive with no activity burn whatsoever). You want to lose a lb. a week. It takes a 3500 calorie deficit to lose a lb. so that's 500 calories every day over a week (500 x 7 = 3500). So MFP would suggest that you eat 1500 calories per day, in order to get that 500 calorie per day deficit. If you are exercising that day, the concern becomes your net calories. Let's say you eat the 1500 calories suggested but then burn 800 more calories in exercise. Now your net calories for the day is only 700. Remember that 1600 that the comatose patients are getting just to survive? You are getting less than half of that (since you used up so many calories with exercise). In other words, the deficit is already built in. Make sense?
    3) Please do some research into the harm that eating very little and exercising a lot can do to your metabolism over time. Your body gets used to that and does not burn calories as efficiently. Also, eating at that rate needs to be sustainable over time. If you eat 800-1100 for awhile and lose a bunch of weight and then start eating at a "normal" amount, you will gain the weight right back.
    4) "Crash diets" (which I would define as very low calorie diet and/or excessive amounts of cardio exercise) may cause you to lose weight quickly. However, much of what you lose is not fat - it is water and worse yet, muscle. You want something that's going to change your body composition - more muscle and definitely less fat!
    5) As someone who struggles with PCOS too, I know where you're coming from. So believe me, I am not trying to be harsh. Feel free to send me a FR - I have several friends who are dealing with PCOS using diet and exercise.

    I have PCOS too.

Let me tell you with all the love and caring I have that you will burn out! You want to be healthy, not severely malnourished and weak. I am 4'11", never exercise more than 45 minutes a day 4-5 times a week and to maintain my weight I need to eat 2000 calories. Please listen to Miranda......I totally agree with her.
  • Thanks all! Im trying. I now have to figure out how to get all the calories in with such low calorie & healthy foods. I appreciate your comments & I welcome any & all feedback. I don't take this negatively. I look at it as this is my reality and I need to learn to do this the correct way...as my way has failed me! Im glad I found this site and I am grateful to be able to relate and learn from others in this journey.
