What to eat for lunch before my evening running?

During the weekend I run in the morning on an empty stomach but twice per week I run at 7pm for 7-8K alternating speeding with jogging. I have a very sensitive stomach, so I cannot eat too much before my run and especially, the latest I can eat is 2hrs before my training. Any lunch/ lunch+snack suggestions? What do you guys running in the evening usually eat? MANY THANKS!

Hey Martina, Thanks for the add! I have a pretty sensitive stomach too, but running on an empty stomach is even worse for me. I try and pack something bland with carbs and a bit of protein like a bagel with smooth peanut butter and bit of honey or two rice cakes (lightly salted) with hummus on top.

I do well on a few small slices of malt loaf - not sure if that's just a UK thing. It's dense, energy packed and doesn't seem to cause any challenges digestion wise for me. I use it on race days and often before long runs.

Thank you guys! I am having half a bagel (whole wheat) with lox and a small fruit salad right know. I'll have half a banana with some PB before I leave the office this evening and I'll see how it'll go with my training!

I really like Luna bars. They have a lot of flavors to choose from and only about 190 calories with 8-9 grams of protein and 3-4 grams of fiber. I will have that as an afternoon snack anywhere from 2-3 hours before my run.

Hi Lisa, I had a white chocolate and macademia nuts Luna bar 2hrs before my run yesterday, together with espresso+4oz of milk. It worked! Thank you!

I cant run on a full stomach either, so its got to be a light snack like yoghurt/ nuts etc. I normally run in the evening too between 7-8pm.

Another thing you can try is quinoa! It has more protein per oz than many meats, which means it will keep you fuller and energized longer. It's a plant and is pretty tasty and never feels heavy in my stomach.. It's my go-to for pre-long run fuel!

Thank you to all of you guys! I've been wanting to try quinoa for a while now...gotta add it to my grocery list!
  • I like Clif bars as a pre-workout snack, personally. They're not much different from Luna bars, though. I bought a box of those once and liked them but I was kind of embarrassed to be eating them since the packaging basically says they're made for women. :P
