Step 1
Set a realistic weight loss goal, no matter what your medical condition is. Break down a large goal into smaller goals; you will sustain your motivation, and it can be less overwhelming this way.

Step 2
Change the way you eat, especially if you have diabetes. The American Diabetes Association suggests taking your dinner plate and envision a line down the center. Then cut one side so the plate is split into three sections. The largest section should be filled with non starchy vegetables like carrots or broccoli; one small section should be filled with starchy foods like pasta or whole grains; the remaining section is for meat or meat substitutes.

Step 3
Participate in physical activity most days of the week, for at least 30 minutes each time. This can help control your fatty liver disease and aid in weight management. Exercise can also help manage your cholesterol, which can be a risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Step 4
Take your thyroid medication regularly, as prescribed, if you have hypothyroidism. The American Thyroid Association states that most of the weight gain with this condition is salt and water, and the medication typically helps the body excrete this excess water weight. Although taking excess hormone medication has been used as a weight loss tool, it is not recommended, since weight gain occurs when the medication is stopped.
