Just a few questions :)

I started taking metformin 3 weeks ago. My dr. started me on 500 mg for two weeks and I just recently started 1000 mg 500 in morning 500 before bed. I haven't had any side effects....but I'm also wondering you all that have and can take it....since I've been taking 1000mg my body feels so sore? Is that normal? Also, the last 3 days I have been having I guess I'll call it "ovulation pain" just a pain in that area I don't know if it ovulation or not, I haven't had a peroid on my own yet. Also the last 3 days my lower back has been so sore too...it's just weird as soon as I started 1000 mg my body is so sore...so just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and how long it took to stop that. :) Also...since I'm on this subject...how long were you taking metformin before you had your first own period? It's weird but I am so excited that I might get it on my own...I am 24 and have only had a handful of periods my whole life without help from medication. Thanks for your input :) Much appreciated!

I haven't taken metformin, but if you are trying to conceive and hopeful to get your own periods soon (yipee!), there are pretty cheap ovulation tests available for purchase through amazon. They can be tricky to read sometimes since you are comparing to a control line that is different each time, but a positive is clearly a positive. You might want to invest in some so you aren't wondering if something is ovulation or not. The same company also makes pregnancy tests. They are the light blue (ovulation) and pink (pregnancy) packages.

    In any case, good luck!

I have been taking Metformin since April 2012. I started at 500, then up to 1000 and was on 1000 for three months, then went up to 2000. I had gone off of the pill in December 2011 and had only one regular cycle (in addition to the "withdrawl bleed" immediately after stopping the pill). So, a period in Dec, one in Jan and then nothing. As soon as the dosage was up to 2000, I had a period within two weeks. Amazing stuff! That was July and since then, I haven't gone longer than 2 month (amazing since before that it had been seven months) and I am usually about five weeks. I've been as low as 31 days, which is totally normal.
Don't know anything about the body soreness, sorry.
As for ovulation kits, I would look more into that. My understanding is that those tend to track the hormone before ovulation and we do produce that, it's just that we don't ovulate. I've read that the only accurate test is using basal body temp (BBT) and I gotta tell you, I did that and it did not work. I took my temp every day and then all of a sudden I started getting my period and it had never changed.

I can never do the BBT either! I always wake up before the alarm or have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. There is zero chance I can get an accurate reading after 4 hours of sound sleep. What's a girl to do?
  • Im going to start metformin on Sunday as I don't want to mess up my hubby's plans regarding valentines day this entirely weekend. I once looked at an ovulation monitor by clear blue easy ($200 & the test strips were $40 or so.....long time ago) as it takes all the guess work out but it stated if you had PCOS or were on clomid it was not reliable. We do produce the hormones just not enough or not enough at the correct time/times I would suggest you contact a reputable reproductive/endocrinologist. They have the most accurate answers. BBT never worked for me either....

I have not taken Metformin since I was pregnant with my daughter in 2008, however when I did, I also started at the 500mg dose, going to 1000mg after a week, and then 1500mg the week after that. I was on the extended release version, which is supposed to be easier on your digestive system and such. I never had any side effects of any kind when I took the metformin. It definitely regulated my periods after a few months. I ended up having pretty regular 35 day cycles. As for the Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor - I used it and it worked for me. It just will take a few cycles for it to "learn" your body. But - it can be done with PCOS.
