The spirit of Valentine <3

So, when i was a kid the spirit of Valentines wasn't just for couples, it was for singles to let their feelings flow to someone they have a crush on!! Or fancy, as we say here in UK , PJ!

But just to retain dignity and be cool, the card was anonymous!! I dont know if you did/do this in America?? But we'd either post a card with "Guess who?" or "?" or give some kind of clue "I have brown hair"...........etc And the question posed would be "Will you be my Valentine?" or just "Happy Valentines"

So, seeing as email and PM's and texts are the modern day comms, I guess that tradition is pretty impossible now? Although you could use a mate's phone so an unknown number came up? I don't know, what do kids do these days?

Anyway, in the spirit of Valentine, I'm going to send a text to a crush!!!

Are you ?? An MFP crush would be good. Or someone IRL that doesnt know. Or just someone you have feelings for that has a pretty good idea..........

Go on, I dare ya!!

I don't recall it being anonymous when I was a kid, but it was much more of a friendly gesture than solely a romantic one. Can't speak for kids these days as I have no idea what they do!

    Here's a 'modern' Valentines poem c: 1784
The modern cliché Valentine's Day poem can be found in the collection of English nursery rhymes Gammer Gurton's Garland (1784):

The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
    Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you

I think I might text that one. Mind you, it's a bit girly, right?? I mean, meant for a girl??

Ohhhh, perhaps that was a British thing then??

    Here's a quick except fromWiki:
In 1797, a British publisher issued The Young Man's Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Printers had already begun producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called "mechanical valentines," and a reduction in postal rates in the next century ushered in the less personal but easier practice of mailing Valentines. That, in turn, made it possible for the first time to exchange cards anonymously, which is taken as the reason for the sudden appearance of racy verse in an era otherwise prudishly Victorian.[49]

  • It was totally annon when I was younger. Loved it!
I am sending messages/texts to many tomorrow. Share the love.

There is also a movement to turn V day into a day of generosity. I will look for some opportunities to do that.

Beats drinking and crying over the lack of romantic love in my life!

No crush here.... but, I'll be waiting by my phone to see how the little guy's day at school went. He wrote her a nice note inside the card. I'm so nervous for him, but he was smiling all night. I hope he's still smiling so big tomorrow!!

I think of Valentine's day as a "love" day rather than a "day for lovers" exclusively.
So yes, I think you can celebrate love and your past, present or future relationships on that day. Even b!tch and moan about the other sex on that day is fine.

Got a crush, but won't be telling them, too much of a wuss for that, haven't decided if any sign there that risking friendship will have a good result!

Wished another friend happy valentines day but she knows nothing more meant in that.
