Thyroid Issue and Pregnancy

So my OB scared me silly I thought I'd vent and share what I've learned with others...
My doctor put me on Levothyroxine after undergoing my fertility investigation cycle. Something about my TSH level being slightly out of range (too high I think) and that this can effect my ability to concieve. (I have experienced one miscarriage previously)
So HURRAH, after a bit of *ahem* work and some fertility meds we got pregnant!
I was also made to take prescription prenatals (pregvit) where you take an iron pill in the AM and a calcium pill in the PM. (Calcium effects the absorbtion of iron so you're not to take them together).
Then throw the levothyroxine into the mix - it needs to be taken at the same time every day, and not within 4 hrs of any vitamins.
It got pretty tough to co-ordinate this, especially during my first trimester! Come the second trimester I was still rather inconsistent.
I met with my OB friday and here's the scary part...she told me that NOT taking this pill can greatly effect the MENTAL CAPACITY of my Babes!!!
She gave me a new scrip and tested my blood and if I was over 2 I was to have it filled. Well my test came back at 3.4. This scrip is different than the last, I'm on synthroid now which is 0.25 mcg instead of 0.05...but still.
Had I known any of this prior I would have faithfully taken these pills no matter the inconvienience!
Here's hoping my little lady makes it into University!!!

How scary for you! Even if you took the meds as directed, just due to changes in hormones due to pregnancy you may have needed to increase the dosage. Dont beat yourself up!0

Don't worry too much. I just saw my Endocrinologist this morning about my thyroid medication, and he said they don't really know a lot about how thyroid medication deprivation effects babies, as obviously it wouldn't be ethical to do a study on it. He said most likely the baby would take what it needed and leave mum deprived and feeling the effects (similar to other nutrients). Keep taking your medicine but don't fret. I'm sure your daughter will be living up to her academic potential in no time.0

I am hypothyroid (due to Hashimotos). My TSH was 177. Got it to 5.8 and i got pregnant. it then went up to 10 so had my dose higher. My daughter is now 6 months old and perfectly healthy. Dont let them worry you over a TSH of 3.4
Take the thyroid meds as soon as u wake up with water, try wait 30mins to eat. Take iron at lunch and then calcium with dinner. Hope that helps x0
