Nutrition for PCOS

I am hoping someone can refer me to a website or book that discusses a nutrition plan for someone with PCOS. When I found out I had it, my dr. didn't give me this info or tell me I should change my diet. Now that I am on mfp and I'm reading soooo many posts about it, I really want to know what is recommended.

  • Did your doctor mention if it was hormone or insulin related? If you are insulin resistant, look into a low carb diet. I've noticed by cutting pasta, bread, and rice, my PCOS symptoms have gotten better. Things are more normal, and I'm not retaining a lot of water weight. Those of us with insulin resistance are sensitive to carbs, because it spikes our insulin levels. :flowerforyou:

There is a book that I have found in google searches called the PCOS Diet, I am looking into getting it. But I currently eat low on the glycemic index everything I find on it is to eat Low Carb and a friend that I just learned who has PCOS and has known she has had it for over 10 years said she always feels better when she is eating low carb and she doesn't have the insoline resistance that I have.
  • I wasn't told that I am insulin resistant. According to my doctor, my PCOS isn't as severe as others so I don't think she really took it seriously. I've just noticed in the past two years some other symptoms creeping in: pelvic pain, additional hair(more than the usual to much) and of course, weight gain.
  • Just out of curiosity, when you say you are "sensitive to carbs", what does that mean? what happens if you eat carbs?

Search PCOS at your local library, I found several books when I was first diagnosed but I can't recall the names. I just found them on the library catalog.
  • I am overwhelmed with all of the research I have to do! Can't I just take a magic pill? :)
