I had never heard of a foam roller until MFP, but they seem to be pretty useful. Can anyone advise me of some stores that carry them and any suggestions if there is a difference in brands, etc? Should there be instructions included when I purchase one?

I am also interested in purchasing fractional weights because I know I will stall on upper body exercises sooner than lower body. Any suggestions on where and what brand for those are also welcomed!

Thanks in advance!

hey! i've only had my foam roller a few months, but i love it. i got it off amazon for 20$, http://www.amazon.com/Black-High-Density-Foam-Rollers/dp/B0040NJOA0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362675245&sr=8-1&keywords=black+foam+roller I think it was that one.

I chose high density because I heard the white, lower density ones wear out quickly. I got the 36 inch, circular one because I like rolling around on the floor hah.

I searched online for ways to foam roll my usually sore areas, which are usually my thighs, back, butt and abs.

Not sure about fractional weights, however some people I know go to home depot and get steel washers. They're inexpensive and come in many different sizes and weights.

I got mine on amazon too -

and as far as fractional weights. Amazon sells some machined ones, but there are also super big washers sold at some hardware stores (you need the one wiht the 2 inch holes) that weigh very roughly 1.1 lbs (so close enough!) that people use.

Vegas uses duct tape rolls - she found some that weight .5lbs each and uses them.

You can also shell out for the full fancy fractional weight set that includes .25lb weights on up - I think they'd be really neat to have for stuff like hte OHP but they're not strictly necessary and they're certainly your most expensive option. (just google fractional weight set)

According to Rippetoe, baseball batting weights work too. They come in 16 oz and cost about 6 bucks a pop.

Methinks I'll go looking for washers though as they seem far more economical ...

Edit: Fastenal or McMaster-Carr washers is what you're looking for (after some searching):

I got mine ages ago at the store that must not be named: D.i.c.k.s.

But, my target has them now too.

I got my foam roller at KMart of all places - it's a Weider 3-in-1 massage roller and I think I paid 35 for it. It's pretty cool, 3 different sizes one inside the other.

I just purchased a 4-pack of 2-inch zinc finish flat washers at our local Fastenal store for about 14 bucks (incl tax).

Fits perfectly over my bar at 0.59 lbs a piece, so that should tide me over perfectly until I can pick up another couple washers (they only had 4 in stock right now but should get more in next week).

Oh and here is the foam roller I have:

    That cracked me up!

I've mentioned this elsewhere; I have a rumble roller which is awesome and pricey, but doesn't wear out. The down side is it's my first roller and I don't roll out as often as would probably benefit me, because it hurts too much. I wish I would have gotten a foam one to start.

I have fractional washers from Christians Fitness Factory. I got them on Amazon and realized Tuesday their store is like 2 miles from my house. :blushing: They're decently priced (compared to other brands,) but the paint chips easily. No powder coating makes me a sad tree. I really like them, and I think they've helped me progress a lot faster in my OHP. I might start using them in my bench as I repeated my last weight, and it was so hard I thought I was going to fail the last rep on all sets.
