Went to a powerlifting gym yesterday

So I checked out this power lifting gym and pretty much everyone there seems to know what they're doing. It's all barbell stuff that they do there and as an extra bonus, they actually teach you how to do the lifts! One of the ladies actually yelled out that my hands were too much on top of the bar. lol It's a nice change from the atmosphere of a commercial gym where most people use random machines for the sake of doing something. Everyone there was very helpful and knew how to spot on the bench press too.
Then I started my Olympic lifts. The owner was the main guy helping me. Everyone stood around watching while he was teaching me some things. Everyone there is so experienced I felt like a noob. There was even a 16 year old kid there that deadliftied over 400 pounds!

Sounds like you found the perfect gym. Learning proper form is important to prevent injury. Everyone started out as a noob, don't be scared and have fun.0

Part of me wonders what that would feel like, to lift with others, but the other part of me knows it's better to just lift in my garage because I'm so distractible, I'd probably drop a bar on my head or foot if I was lifting with other people. I have to be in "the zone" and give it my full focus, or no cigar.
I envy people that can work out with other people successfully. I'm not one of them. Darn squirrels. :blushing:0 -
Been looking into one of these in phoenix haven't really found one that's right for me yet. Also I kinds want to be lifting more before I go. So Ill probably give it another 6 months or so.0

My trainer owns a strongman/powerlifting type gym, and it is indeed glorious to workout in! I'll probably join it eventually.0

The thing about this particular powerlifting gym is that the owner disagrees with squatting three times a week. The method he explained was more of an intermediate program with squats only 2 times a week.
I think his technique for Olympic weightlifting is completely wrong. As I tried i the lifts using his technique, it was very difficult to get under the bar. The way I've been doing it has been more efficient.
Honestly, I may not end up sticking around. We just seem to disagree about a lot of things.0 -

I was contemplating a powerlifting gym at some point because it might be interesting to have lifting people around (I've never seen anyone in my gym do a complete squat). Unfortunately the closest one is 30 miles away through most of Houston and it's suburbs (at least an hour drive). That's not going to happen...0

The closest one to me is in the scary part of town but there is another not too far away that I'm going to check out. I'm not sure if it's still open.0
