5K app pauses when phone screen locks

Whenever I try to use the 5K app on a treadmill at the gym, the app pauses whenever my phone turns off the screen. I have now tried four times to do the second workout of the first week, and every time i walk for well over ten minutes, and check the phone only to discover that the app is on two-something minutes and is just resuming after having been paused all that time. Accelerometer on or off doesn't seem to matter.
The app works when I run outside, using GPS, so I know it can be made to work. Just not without GPS, apparently. Or is it just a matter of a setting on my Galaxy S3 that needs to change?
Help!

I don't use a treadmill so I've never tried it with the accelerometer...have you checked with the zombies run support?0

Not yet. I was hoping someone here recognized the issue and knew of an easy fix. If no one does, and it seems that's the case, then I'll email them and report back what they say.0

Here's what their support said:
We're aware that there's a problem with screen locking causing the app to pause and/or stop tracking, but I've not heard of this happening in such specific circumstances. Unfortunately if screen locking is causing a problem with tracking then the only solution, irritating as it is, is to make sure that you keep the phone unlocked. However, locking the screen causing the app to pause is a more serious issue. The solution above will help with that.
As regards synching, we're aware there are problems with synching in the 5K app, and are working to resolve these issues. Hopefully we'll have a fix for this problem soon.0 -
that doesn't seem very helpful. you have tried accelerometer outside? you are holding/wearing you phone while on the treadmill right? (sorry if that sounds like a stupid question)0

I left out most of the personalized parts of it with troubleshooting ideas (mainly because I've tried most of them and didn't bother to tell them about that).
I tried both holding the phone and having it in my pocket, it made no difference. I haven't tried the accelerometer outside, since I use the GPS so I can get the map feature as well0
