i am new to the group. my name is Katie. I am currently 180 pounds. my goal weight is 140 pounds. I have 40 more pounds to go before reaching it. so for my calories perhaps I should go on scoobysworkshop to see what calories for a 140 pound person are?

Sorry so delayed. There are many doing the Future You method that have such constant schedules they just set it and forget it, and it works, and rarely do they come back here for updates, though I get PM's on progress.
That can give you a rough ballpark figure, and for some period of time you'll get rough ballpark results likely.
Easiest to just use best estimates of BMR, activity calculator, to get TDEE.
This will let you log progress too.
