First of all I have no affiliation with this book / podcast so this plug is not for personal gain.
I see a lot of posts on MFP with people who are struggling with knee / hip / foot pain. The standard answers are rest, ice, ibuprofen and go see your doctor. A lot of the time the doctors answer is rest ice and don't run anymore. The problem is that ice and ibuprofen treat the symptoms not the cause, and rest simply weakens the tissues and re-injury is nearly inevitable when you return to activity.
I found a great book (Anatomy of A Runner) on how to break this rest / injury cycle by identifying the root cause of the problem. The book has lots of self tests to help you diagnose the issue. It also has lots of exercises, drills ... to help prevent injuries if you are currently healthy. The book also shows evidence that heavy squats / deadlifts are good for runners, which makes me happy
The book can be had for $10 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-For-Runners-Prevention-ebook/dp/B00AMLFSHM
Jay was also featured on the Trail Runner nation podcast which you can listen to for free here http://trailrunnernation.com/podpress_trac/feed/8646/0/jaydicharry.mp3
Hope you all stay healthy and meet your goals this season!!!
