I was deleting emails and found a folder of all the original Match.com messages that my favorite guys wrote. Interesting that most of them were short and sweet. The one message in that was very detailed and the guy obviously combed my profile sprinkling things I wrote throughout is the guy who on our second date shook me up when I rebuffed his advances.
The reason I'm posting these is just to highlight that the message doesn't have to be amazing to meet a great guy. These were my favorites out of the 20-something guys I went out with last year and I'd be more than happy for my friends to date the ones that wouldn't work for me.
Bodybuilder guy (he winked and I winked back):
Hi I see I sparked your interest. And I can honestly say you sparked my interest. I'm new at this so forgive me if that sounds wrong.
Intimidated Guy (the one I wrote the "awkward convo" about- I liked him but he was too wrapped around my rank):
Hey,
You are very attractive, and a Christian is a bonus. By the way, you could've just winked...lol. In that pic, you were coming out of an airlock of some sort...so what do you do in the Airforce?
NOTW Tattoo guy (yummy- I actually ended things with him bc he was TOO low in rank, but I really liked him):
Thanks for winking back! I'm XXXX. I'm not trying to be forward, but you have a beautiful smile.
and, finally, here's what BB wrote (I never noticed the typo til now):
Hi,,,,you came up on my daily matches and after looking at your profile I feel we have some things in common. I'd like to get to know more about you. I too am not looking to rush into anything, so maybe we can just start here and see where it goes. Hope to hear from you soon.

I'll never discount a man because of the message he sends (unless it's overtly sexual). I know the online dating game means he has probably had a lot of women ignore the first message, and that most men will just throw out a quick line to see if there's any interest.
For any message received, I look at the profile. As long as his profile has a positive vibe (not bashing women), he's within my age range, has a job, is christian and is local...I will email back. It can't hurt to start a conversation and you never know what could come of it.0 -
Since about 90% of the guys that message me are not anywhere near a guy I would want to date I do not message all guys back. I actually hid my profile this morning because it seemed that every guy that messaged me was either black (not racist I am just not attracted to black guys), under 26 or over 45 or "Looking for friends to hang out"
I do prefer a short message for the first message usually 1-2 sentences long. Anything over that I figure they copy and paste to a lot of women with just changing a couple words.
I think I have gotten to the point where I need to switch to another online dating site.0
