Early morning fuel

Hi All,

Yet another nutrition question, but a pretty specific one:

Last year I developed an early morning ride habit, cranking out 60-70 mile rides leaving the house soon after sunrise. (And I have NEVER been an early riser before.) I don't mind waking up at 5:30 to slap on the bib-shorts and arm warmers, but getting up at 4:30 to eat some breakfast, and give it time to settle is a bit ridiculous.

Does anyone have tips on fueling up for very early AM rides?

Thanks!

I have an iron stomach so take it for what you will. I do all my rides at daybreak. The night before I'll throw a cup/cup and a half of oats, chopped apple, cinnamon, 1/4c vanilla yogurt, enough almond milk to make it a little soupy together in a Tupperware and put it in the fridge. The next morning most the moisture has soaked in and I'll add some almonds or maple syrup. Otherwise just down a gel and be on your way.

I've found that, for whatever reason, I can eat a metric ton of Golden Grahams, wait five minutes, and then do whatever hellish interval set I want and my stomach will handle it. With only an hour ti ride in the morning, I don't have a long warmup.

I've tried that with other cereals and don't always have as happy a result.

My meal is very similar to Scott - actually have a bowl of oats soaking in the kitchen right now for the ride tomorrow - but I'm lazy so just oats, water and milk. Will heat it up in microwave as I like have it hot.

Thanks guys.! The 'soaked oats overnight' actually similar to a musli recipe I've make before, but simplified. A great idea for a solution. (Seeing as I won't be doing Golden Grahams, cyclink)

If your interested, from Bon Appetite: In a small bowl, mix ½ cup frozen raspberries, ½ cup old-fashioned oats, ⅓ cup unsweetened nonfat yogurt, ½ of a large apple (skin on, cored, shredded), fresh-squeezed juice of 1 clementine or ½ of a navel orange, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Cover and chill overnight. In the morning, sprinkle 1 Tbsp. chopped toasted hazelnuts over.

Steel cut oatmeal (i bring water + oatmeal to boil in microwave before bed and reheat in the morning) + blueberries. If the ride is over 50 miles, I will toss a clementine and/or banana in my jersey and probably a gel (Roctane) or two. I am also a bid fan of Nuuns for hydration, particularly when riding in the south during the summer.

    Sounds awesome.

I generally have a strong constitution, but I can not stomach the gels. The Cliff blocks I'm fine with, but the gels are instant rot gut for me. Funny how personal these things can be.
