A Question About Skin

I am still waiting for my surgery but I was wondering if those of you who have lost their weight could talk about the issue of excess skin and the surgery that goes along with it?

I lost 100 pounds and I have some skin on my arms and my breasts are floppy and I have a panus. Oh, I'm a bit jowly. I have loose skin in other places but I think only I notice those -- hands, behind my calves.
When I am very active and have a low body fat percentage, it bugs me a lot. But right now when I'm more filled out with both muscle and fat, it doesn't bother me that much.
I look good in clothes.0 -
Thanks. That makes me feel better. Everyone I have talked to here including the dr and dietician have said that I will need to have plastic surgery but that is $15,000 and I really can't afford that. I know that everyone is different but if you don't need the plastic surgery then perhaps I won't as well.0

You can look at some previous posts - this a common question/ concern, but essentially until you reach your goal you wont know if its something that will be a problem or not. Some people luck out and have minimal excess skin while others have more. Factors will depend on your starting weight (not just at surgery but the highest weight), height (this is a big one) and age. You can try to tone as your losing, some people say that helps others say it doesnt do much, etc.
However, all in all its a personal decision, some people are really bothered by excess skin and others are less so. Also some peoples insurance, including mine, cover a removal of a pannectomy (spelling unsure) basically excessive hanging skin in the stomach area and for some that good enough while others will opt for more costly surgeries such as tummy tucks or body lifts, etc.
I have a lot of excess skin (I'm fairly short 5'2 and my highest weight as 320+, I'm now down +130 pounds) and I would like to get everything done LOL but its too costly so I'm planning on going just for the lower body issues - thighs, stomach, hips - because that area bother me the most. However when I am dressed, and dressed well I can cover/ hide most of the flabbiness and for now thats good enough; people often think I weigh less or I'm a smaller size then I really am because they are unaware of the excess skin problem.
Try not to be too concerned about it off the bat, in my experience its better to have some saggy/ excess skin that can be covered and perhaps even removed rather than the excess weight! :happy:0 -

But some people really do need it. Either for physical reasons or for psychological ones.0 -
I always thought I would want it but now I am not so sure. I have a stomach still, my boobs have shrunk to virtually nothing and I have sagging skin on my arms and legs. BUT my OH is not bothered by it, he loved me full of fat so the more happy active me is much better for him!!! And for me well if it causes me problems like skin break down or infections I will consider it but if not then probably not. I know the ops are difficult and can have a long recovery time and I feel like my skin is a badge of honour. It is a constant reminder of what I have done and why I must never go back.
It is all personal though. Your opnions may chnage so give yourself time to think about it. When your body changes your feelings about it will change too.0 -
