152 Mile 'Ride to Montauk'.

Hi All...

I think I'm just saying this out loud so as to make it more real... I'm thinking of taking on a 152 mile ride in 7 weeks. The 'Ride to Montauk' has shorter routes, including a century, but where's the challenge in that? It's a one-way ride across the total length of Long Island, with transportation back to Manhattan (for both bikes and riders) coordinated by the producers.

I've hit a 66 mile ride already this season, and my regular distance training route is much hillier than the ride's course will be. Currently funempoyed, I have the time to clock the miles, and would be well served with a goal to work towards. Last year was my first season, and I did a century in the same timeline. I went on to ride 2 more centuries and a 3 day, 275 mile ride, so I don't think it's all that unreasonable.

You have a great base so I'd say go for it... As you said it is only a challenge when it is a challenge...

Never ridden that long myself but did several 140 miles. I reckon as long as one refuels & rests properly that distance would be fine. Personally I find the early part is the hardest as need to be discipline - be conservative, go slower, don't get too excited waste unnecessary energy, things actually gets easier after eg the half way mark when I'm in the zone, just pedal like clockwork (or more like a zombie:laugh: )

Good luck with the ride if you choose to accept the challenge!!!

The hardest discipline I'll need the the will to get out of bed at some time before 4am. It's a 5-6am start window. Biking 10 miles to the start would be fastest, but taking the subway may be the most reasonable...

Only if there's no headwind. Farther out on the island the wind can be a real b*tch, and since the ride is one way.....

Yes, I did the 5BBC Montauk Century last year, and learned all about headwinds. Not only is this one way, but also, the South Fork, with the worst winds, is the end, not middle of the day.

    An Update...

I didn't think I was going to be able to do the ride, because of another commitment I had that day. Commitment fell through, allowing me to ride, but on just 3 weeks notice. I wasn't as prepared as I'd have like to be, mentally at least. (And I'm mentally prepared when I know I'm physically ready...)

Last weekend saw a heatwave here, which for me meant I didn't need to bother with layers or arm warmers for the 5am start, and I'd reached the cooler costal suburbs before the heat really scorched the city. All told I'm well pleased with my ride. I lost some steam in the last 20 miles, and skipped the lobster roll stop I was so looking forward to, for fear of not having the will to remount the bike.

Here's the Garmin on it... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/321363366

Great ride, congrats. Too bad that you missed the lobster roll. Was out in Montauk 20 years ago and had one. I'd have gotten off the bike. :-)

It wasn't too heart breaking to miss them, for a couple of factors: My Maine vacation a month ago was a hard-core lobster-fest, and the parking lots of the Montauk clam shacks were packed with Range Rovers, BMWs and Benzs, indicating an intolerable of Hamptons douche-baggery that is best skipped out on.
