Anyone discover hypothyroidism in early pregnancy?

I had my first trimester bloodwork done last week and the doctor called last night with the news of "some abnormal results." Since I was tested for HIV and for being a carrier of some horrible genetic diseases...my heart naturally started pounding.
All that is was was that my TSH was high (8.7), and that my T4 was "normal" but on the slightly low side of the normal range.
He faxed over a Rx for Synthyroid and said I needed to start taking it right away because hypothyroidsm can be really dangerous during pregnancy. I started taking it this morning.
I have never had symptoms of hypothyroidism at all. If anything I have had symptoms of hyperthyroidism. I also had a thyroid panel run a little over a year ago and it was fine.
Anyone else discover hypothyroidism early in their pregnancy?
I'm 7 weeks along and am wondering if it caused some major problems for my baby to not have enough thyroid hormones for the first 5 weeks, since it can't make it's own yet.
Am I just being paranoid?

Hi there,
Sorry about the stress the diagnosis has brought on.
I too was diagnosed early in pregnancy with hypothyroidism, but unlike you I had hypo symptoms for 3 years. I'm 33 weeks now and baby is doing fine. I'm not gonna lie, trying to get my numbers right is like an endless game. Too high, too low. Ugh
I hear of hypothyroidism happening more and more often in pregnancy, I think your baby will be fine. Stay on top of your meds and remember to get your blood work checked every 4-6 weeks.
Hang in there!0 -
I also take perscription to control my TSH levels...found out I had an issue with my thyroid during fertility testing so I was taking the medication prior to conception.
My OB gave me a big scare though - I told her I had stopped taking the medication (I was on separate calcium and iron prenatals that I had to take morning/night and trying to fit Levothyroxine in the mix with difficult).
Well she told me that not taking the medication could greatly effect the "mental capabilities" of my baby.
I FREAKED - and of course posted here on MFP...turns out there's little study to show this is true, and that it might mean the difference between a college or university education.
Morale of the story, I now faithfully take my meds! (I'm on synthroid now, and my TSH tests slighly above 2)0 -
I had hyper which gets me a maternal/fetal specialist a growth ultrasound every month. no meds and two weeks before induction0

wow, OP, your tsh is high for you to feel no symptoms! I am glad you are taking meds now. It might take a few months to get the right dose. I was diagnosed before I got pregnant, and was told that I would have had a lot of trouble getting pregnant had I not been on meds. Thank goodness for modern medicine.0
