OHP/Gym Etiquette Question...

Hey everyone! I'm new here and so glad that I found this group! Lots of amazing info here.
Anyway, I've just ended my first week of SL and I love it! On my OHP I used a 40 pound fixed barbell and was able to do the 5x5 fairly easily. I want to use the barbell next time, but there's not really a place for me in the gym to do OHP with the barbell except for inside the squat rack or in front of the squat rack where I do rows and deadlifts. Is it appropriate to OHP in the squat rack? I've heard "don't do curls in the squat rack!" and don't want to be *that person* at the gym. What do you think?

I do my OHP in the squat rack or in the power cage/rack and have never seen any dirty looks coming my way. The main reason it is okay is because at some point you won't want to have to clean the weight before starting. Having it in the rack at shoulder height or so will allow you to focus on the lift. Plus, if you are following the lift order, you should already be in the rack and if anyone is waiting, you can offer to let them rotate in. If they say no, then it is on them. They may grumble that you are not using a OHP bench where you sit, but that really takes a lot of the stability work out and that isn't what you want.

    Lift on.

I would use the front mat area in front of the squat rack since that is what it's there for. :) That way the rack is open to people doing squat moves and you are still on a padded area if a weight drops.

my bf and i do our OHP at the squat rack, and we originally realized we could do that after seeing a couple other people do it.

as the weights become heavier, it's wonderful not having to bring the bar up from the floor!

Rack/cage definitely to avoid cleaning it before you start each set.

I also do it in the rack, after I've moved the safety bars up to their highest point - that way if I have to drop it for whatever reason (although it's more likely I just couldn't push it up), it won't have to fall quite so far. And I think it's perfectly acceptable at most gyms.

Did OHP today with the bar in the rack. I'm so glad I could just put the bar back on the rack at shoulder level after each set! Holy crap. I'm gonna be feeling those tomorrow!
