it's me, the girl with no equipment, just weights, barbells, and dumbells.

i've been doing hack squats since no squat rack, but am considering goblet squats for every other workout instead. i think i remember some of you discussing them a few months ago.

anyone have experience with them?? any clue how much weight i should pack on the dumbell (obviously i can figure this out with trial and error) but wondering if it'll be WAY less than for hack squat????

I usually do goblet squats with kettle bells. They're basically a sumo-style front squat. Far as weight, it's going to be trial and error. Sorry if that's not helpful but I've never done hack squats.

I do front squats without a squat rack. Do you have those in your rotation? You would basically have to train power cleans so that you can clean your own weighted bar to your shoulders, and then squat on with your bad self. :flowerforyou:

I started with front squats, then moved to hack once my power cleaning (if you can call it that, lol) was too weak to get the bar up there. :) hmmm....now i'm wondering since my upper body strength has improved, maybe i can front squat again. hmmm...

how does your goblet weight compare to your front squat weight?

I found my arms limited by front squat wait and after 53lb I shifted to hack squat, and immediately went up 10lb or more. Of course, hacks work the glutes sub-optimally compared to back squats, which is why I then joined a gym with a power cage! Clean+front squts might be your best bet if you can find someone to teach you the clean.

yes!! glutes and quads i feel SO MUCH less with hack, which is why i'm venturing into goblets...i cannot join a gym and we are moving in july/august and then we'll have a basement so i can hopefully find a squat rack on craig's list.

in the meantime...do you think goblets will better work glutes/quads???? assuming i don't learn to powerclean?

I found hacks focussed on quads at the expense of glutes. Goblets were brutal on all muscles including abs :)

(Please excuse typos earlier. I have no idea what planet my vocabulary brain was on, but it sure wasn't this one!)

It's not really a fair comparison since my front squat is 45 (with my ez curl bar + weights) and I do that for strength as an assist to my back squat, but I do my goblet squats with my 8-pound kettlebell for endurance circuit.

Are you going for strength increases with all your squats, or do you use any of them for endurance purposes?

really??....isn't that so interesting that we find them so different!!??? i run hills, so have strong hamstrings...is it possible to be "hamstring dominant" so they take over most of the work and let my quads do less work?

and now that you said that goblets are brutal i am DYING to try them tomorrow morning!! lol.

i guess since i'd be doing them INSTEAD of normal squats, it would be for strength increase?? but i'm not exactly sure. at this point i'm looking to decrease body fat, not necessarily gain more muscle. so, yeah, i'm not sure. :)

Bumping for information, as I don't have a squat rack either (currently doing front squats).

Hey, I don't know what your situation is and why you don't have access to a squat rack, but this made me think of you:
