"DOCTOR Who fan David Dovey is giving away 14,000 books from the TV series to schools after finding them on the eBay auction site.
When an Essex skip hire firm arrived at a house to collect one of their skips, they found that the Tardis-like bin was brimming with some 14,000 Doctor Who books.The firm's bosses couldn't bring themselves to pulp the massive literary haul and put them all on eBay under one lot and seven days of bidding started at just 99p.
Longlevens man David, 46, dreamt of buying the books to hand out to schools across the country – it was, after all, a Doctor Who book that introduced him to his love of reading as a child.
But it was only when two pals persuaded him that they should club together to make a bid that it actually became reality.
Amazingly, after just 35 bids, the friends bagged the bumper set of books for just £656.
"Doctor Who changed my life. Before that, reading was boring," said David.
"Having worked in schools I thought it would be amazing to get the books and hand them out to schools to inspire other youngsters.
"I never thought we'd actually be able to do it.
"It is, after all, the 50th anniversary for Doctor Who and I thought the books would be incredibly popular."
Soon, school libraries across the country are going to be adding the books to their collections.
Some 300 schools have already signed up.
There are 36 different titles among the vast collection but around 800 brand new copies of each, still wrapped in bundles of 100.
The books were all written between 1973 and 1994 and are direct serialisations of episodes from the classic TV series.
Only 1,400 of the books have been allocated since the auction in February – meaning many more schools are set to benefit.
David said: "We are a small group who passionately believe in children’s reading and we hail from England, Scotland, Wales, Eire, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and Ukraine.
"Those of us in the UK are meeting up in various locations and passing boxes of books between us. We are also hoping to find a way of shipping some of our books across to pond, so our North American donors can distribute some to their schools too!"
David also hopes to launch a campaign to persuade as many Doctor Who fans across the world to buy just one book and hand it to their nearest school library to boost their collections.
Gloucestershire schools interested in claiming their eight free books should send the name of the school and a contact name to targetwho@virginmedia.com.

I am "aww-ing" so hard right now. Books were my escape when I was a kid, and I directly attribute my intelligence & thirst for knowledge from all the time I spent reading.

This guy is awesome.. Reading was my favorite thing to do as a child. The worst thing my parents could do was to ban me from the library.. Even now..I love to read..it just takes you out of where you are..and places you into these amazing lands..Kudos to them!!!0
